So far the block logo guitars that have popped up in the flesh have been ST50/55s and TE50/55.

Wondering why I am not seeing higher priced models? The '83 price list shows all the other options available. Odd.

Colors so far:

ST50/55 - FO, MR, SO, PB, GM (matching headstocks in MR and SO)
TE50/55 - WR, MR, MB, BL, GS

Funny what folks didn't know about Tokais in 2006.

But bobtastik nails it.

I don't think you are going to find 100% documentary evidence, as far as I know the BLOCK logo was a temporary stopgap, that was only used (1983) while Tokai came up with the newer logo that is used to this day. I have personally have 4 Springys and one Goldstar with this type of BLOCK logo, I see no reason to doubt the authenticity of the Guitars that the mentioned Ebayer is selling.

"... in so far as the defendants now wish to try to secure the release of those 205 guitars bearing that infringing mark "Strat", possibly on the basis of being able to delete the infringing mark, they must follow the procedure which is set out in the appropriate statute relating to the position"

Lawsuit?

I missed your q before, but here's my experience and understanding:

* before 1983, the '7okai' logo was on all F-style vintage copies. It was on the guitar reviews I saw back then.

* in 1983, I buy my first Tokai. I order it unseen on the strength of the stellar guitar magazine reviews. I was given a price by the guitar shop - no options or spec levels at all were offered. When I get the call it's a vintage red (not FO/MR/WR - a blood red more like Fender's Dakota red) Springy Sound with the 'BLOCK' logo on a matching headstock. I'm a bit miffed by the altered logo, but happier about the painted headstock

* in 1983, for reasons I've never seen explained, Tokai changes the guitar's name to Goldstar Sound. Later comes the altered headstock shape.

* in the 1990s, I often searched Loot (UK classified paper) and Guitarist magazine classified section for high-end Tokais - never saw one. At this time I met another Tokai collector (Lee something in London), he had the same experience. Also spoke to Todd Sharpville when he was looking for them - IIRC, he was chasing many Tokai adverts in the UK and a bit fed up of finding the same ST-50/ST-60 guitars with/without matching headstocks.

* so, during the 2000s, I searched many Japanese shops online and bought a pre-1981 '7okai' ST-80 and TE-80 direct.

* I never saw a 'TOKAI' block logo during those Japanese searches, which made me think that it was a UK/Europe-only change

My gut feel is that in the 1980s the UK importer chose to import only the low-end models, and perhaps very few ST-80s and ST-100s. And so it's a coincidence of 'BLOCK' logo at a time when the UK/Europe got only ST-50/55/60.

There was a lawsuit in the UK in 1982 and hundreds of Tokais were seized. The judge ruled that the ones with the word Strat in the logo, Springys, be held until that was remedied.

The remedy was apparently a complete change in the logo. And as I showed above, somebody even screwed that up, reusing the same phrase with the word Strat. Probably a language barrier thing.

And you’re right. It only affected the UK.

The importer you are referring to was named Eric Dixon. I created a thread on here on him a while back.

Eric Dixon & Blue Suede Music Ltd. UK

And you’re also right that no one understood what those were for a long time. I saw them called fakes on here if I recall correctly. So good for you for trying to clear up the confusion. I’ve tried to as well.

And the headstock change was separate. It actually happened for the US market at roughly the same time, late 1982. Different logo for that market as well. The “fat script” logo.

The Export, Transitional or "7okai Fat-Script" Logo

1982 was a crazy year. It started with so much optimism and enthusiasm at Tokai. Unprecedented variety in models and colors. Then the lawsuit. Then they lost the Fender contract.

But they kept going and the block logo and the TST-56 and 62 were proof of their tenacity, adaptability and resilience in my opinion.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s important that you did and that you pressed on in pursuing the truth.

I've had this guitar in my family for years. But I've only really just gotten into telecasters over the last couple of years. I've never been quite sure on the exact model. But I'm thinking TE70 or TTE70. I've not seen another exactly the same. 16761443958226970859062550452843.jpg16761444453422215581616414505136.jpg16761444861956830697477259458388.jpg16761445387434699018383542840123.jpg

Beautiful!

That body looks like a TE/TTE70.

Flamed neck. Wow.

Does it have a 5 digit serial number?

Body and neck codes similar?

Yes 5 digit serial, 136xx

I haven't opened it up yet. From browsing around I can't see that natural was a colour option for a TE70 in 1983.

I'll have a look in the control cavity tomorrow.
