I gotta say I was never much of a Goldie fan til I played Mick's...
At first I thought...meh...it's ok....the neck is a bit chunkier than my LS80...but after a while I was trying my damnedest to smuggle it out of the door as I left.

JohnA has the nicest Goldtop I've ever seen. Apart from Snowy White's.

Ok Mr.Grecoburst. So the truth is that since 1977 until 1981 and to later
the higher class Tokai pickups both ST-A" and "ST-Vintage" all had "E"
stamp on them? And the lower class pickups like "ST-B" and "ST-Hot"
had "U" stamp on them? Do you know what "E" & "U" stands for????
You must be the specialist. Keep on helping us please. Thanks.

Yes, ST-A and ST-Vintage are E stamped Tokai pickups....

Lower ST-B or ST-Hot are U stamped Tokai pickups....

Then to confuse more, Silver Star called their low end model Hot (H stamp) for TSS38 and Super (S stamp) for TSS48, why is not known

Why stamp them E and U, is not known.

Also, the stamps inside the pickup cavity and neck butt eg 4 = 11, are just lot numbers only, however, there are extra stamp markings such as X or A etc, these are unknown, could be A = high grade wood etc, or X = export etc...not known, sorry I can not answer that question.

I used to think that the secret of the goldies were isolated to looks but there's definitely something about playing them

Thanks Mick.....So this is your rare vintage Tokai?
Man. This is just so amazingly fantastic! I haven't seen anything so mint like your guitar here. very unbelievable. looks just like 30 years ago! Where did you get it from and how much? How much would you leave it for if you are politely asked? This guitar is worth paying so much and keep forever! You are the lucky man. So good for ya! Thanks for the pics. Even the pics are too clean too mint too!

I have heard that from my guitar friends before and I really feel it's true....

"There is something about the Goldtop...."

I bought it in Japan and paid $1000 Aussie dollars {800 US} for it. I am really a LP guy but this one was too good too let go. I have no interest in selling this one yet.

Thanks Mick. I ask you politely someday when I can offer you great money, when you feel like getting another great LP. I send you a bunch of fresh sushi from Hong Kong with that! You are in Australia. That's good! Thanks.

And I'm hoping that JohnA will get bored with his GT & sell it to me.

Well it worked with the ST80.

but the fact remains that Es were used in the high end stuff; and the high end stuff on there says they're DiMarzios.

Check out for that issue the "History" section of my website. Thanks again for contribution, Peter!

BTW, the mentioned 1982 German catalog isn't a official Tokai catalog.
It was the Tokai flyer/brochure of the former 1982/1983 German Tokai distributor...

Well, i knew it was 1982 catalog because of DiMarzio started in ST100 that year, but I hope the author has another look at past catalogs and will see that no mention of DiMarzio in Springy Sound until ST100 in 1982. Thank you!

Why rely on the catalogues, i have 2 Tokai guitars that NEVER appeared in the catalogues and just because there was no mention doesn't mean they weren't used, Togps also has guitars from Tokai that never appeared in the catalogues, and i am sure that there is plenty more. So where do you get your info from.?

Mick

If you go solely off the catalogs it's easy to be confused.
As Mick says we've seen many transitional guitars over the years...guitars that were "in between" catalogs...

Maybe he studied all those past Tokai official catalogs well at that site.

vintaxe.com?

They sure have so many catalogs there and let you in by just a dollar I guess. I think I am going to join them soon. A lot of studying ahead of me!

http://www.vintaxe.com/catalogs_japanese_tokai.htm

For example, they have 21 Tokai official catalogs from 1979 until 1999.
And we can see all the pages well I think. I am very suprised that they have that much of stuff there. Well worth joining when we are into the guitars so deep. Anyway a good stuff.

I think its 10 dollars to join that site, so i will give it a miss, i can get all that info from Japan plus info on guitars not in the catalogues so i will continue to do things my way..
