Digging deeper into the clouded history of Tokai in the 1970s, I ran across a 1973 catalog in the Registry that has Hummingbird guitars by Tokai as well as Gaban Gibson clones.

Seems some Gabans were made by Kasuga, but quite possibly by Tokai as well.

Hoping by collecting them it will become a little more clear what Tokai was dong in this period.

Why it's not Tokai:

It wouldn't be the first time or even unusual that a manufacturer also distributed brands/labels they didn't make themselves, a prominent example was certainly Moridaira/Morris.

So far I could not find any Gaban offer that had some interior pics substantiating any theory, except this one:

http://www.teenarama.jp/gaban
That would be an FLG-650 (set-neck top model) with Maxons from 1974 and there's a lot of pics on that site, here are the most important:

Tuners with Kasuga logo

Screenshot 2023-11-13 at 18.51.28.jpg
Plywood top and (interesting) less chaotic routing than seen on many later Kasuga made guitars

What's remarkable is that Tokai seems to offer only a selection of all the Gaban models in that catalog. Besides at least some of the guitars being definitely not made by Tokai, none of the other guitars would remind of Tokai in any way. Instead, many of them are like "seen that one before with a different label" and the model selection and appointments on them do seem to point much to Kasuga as well.

Why it could be not "not Tokai":

I've put my foot in my mouth about that before - the Sigma electrics do not look distinctively like Tokai either (why would they, they look "era-typical"), but the Sigma plywood SG-copy with the German carve reminded me so much of something else that I claimed this wasn't made by Tokai. Later I found the same guitar with Tokai on the headstock. :) So if Tokai made bolt-on plywood planks for Martin, why not for "Gaban"?

But then again - nothing would've kept Tokai from sourcing electrics elsewhere to offer a one-stop solution for Martin and maybe the source was the factory that also made the Gabans ...and maybe they thought "why not offering some of those through our growing retailer network as well?".

In other words this is one of those mysteries again... :)

Edit: Forgot to mention that Gaban and Ganson are usually treated interchangeably as both labels featured the same models and are both attributed to Kasuga, and that attribution checks out pretty well...

Gaban distributed by Hukuhara musical instrument company and probably made by Tokai.
Hukuhara or Fukuhara depending on the translation, owned the Gaban brand name. Most companies that owned the lesser known brand names were music shops in Japan that just ordered guitars from a Japanese guitar factory (that wasn't too busy).

If it's got 2 squarish shaped holes at the bottom of the pickup cavity then it would be made by Tokai, if not then maybe some were made by Kasuga as I would say that Kasuga would be one of my other choices.

Most of these lesser known Japanese brands were made by the lesser known factories like Kasuga, Chushin, Dyna etc and there is a good reason for it, because Fujigen and Tokai were really too busy making more well known brands like Ibanez and Greco and Fender Japan and Yamaha and Tokai and Burny etc to be bothered with smaller lesser known brand contracts so the other lesser known factories mostly picked them up.

【 ジャパンビンテージ 】GABAN Deluxe FLG480S ... - Yahoo!オークション

Description of item
Thank you for visiting our store.
Please be sure to check the information below.

◆Product Information◆

[★Maintained★] GABAN Deluxe FLG480S Made in Japan This is a vintage GABAN made in Japan.

Gaban is a domestic brand that existed for a short period from 1972 to 1974, and at that time produced and sold copy models of overseas brands such as Gibson. Gaban seems to have been a brand of Fukuhara Musical Instruments, but it has a deep connection with Kasuga Musical Instruments Manufacturing, and there are models such as Kasuga Musical Instruments' Ganson that have almost the same specifications but differ only in the brand name.
It seems that it was sold by Tokai Musical Instruments, etc., and you can see Gaban brand models in the catalogs of the time.
Basically, they sold copies of overseas models such as Gibson models, which at the time were very expensive and difficult for ordinary users to buy, at reasonable prices for the domestic market.
Due to its name and logo imitating Gibson, as well as the impression it had at the time, the Gaban has often been treated as a joke as a copy of Gibson, but now it is being praised for its fun and quality as an instrument. It has a fan base and is a popular brand among some enthusiasts and fans.

◆Product condition◆

It is in vintage player condition.
There are signs of aging such as binding peeling.
As there are parts of the overall construction that were cheap at the time, we strongly decline bids from those who are nervous.
All parts are shown in the photo. Please strictly adhere to no claims and no returns.

Hi Sig — do you have any of the Gaban “Deluxe” models with Gibson style mini humbuckers? The pups are mounted within a 2nd ring, so I wondering if the routes were made for Standard humbuckers? The 2nd rings look goofy. I wasn’t sure if it was original until I spotted another one for sale.

Hey there PizzaFLIXTV, I don't own any Gaban guitars nor have I ever seen one in person.

Can you post pics of the guitar you are talking about? Always interesting to be able to see these.
