I've always thought the Danelectro re-issues were rather cool, even though they are cheap (and cheaply made), so I recently grabbed this one on the Bay when I was the sole bidder. I believe this is the U2 re-issue?

It didn't do the brand any harm when I saw Alex Schultz (who had just replaced Junior Watson in The Mighty Flyers) playing what I believe was a Jerry Jones 3 pickup version of one of these around 20 years ago.

Anyway, it's arrived. First impressions - well it feels cheap! Lightweight & rather flimsy, nasty plastic strap buttons, you can tell the body is made from chipboard & other strange materials (Masonite? :-? ). The bolt-on neck arrangement is rather strange, as is the rosewood bridge. The tuners are not wonderful, but perhaps the cheapest feature is that the white "binding" round the edge of the body is a one inch wide strip of white plastic tape! God knows what you would find if that was removed.

So, a load of rubbish? Well, not really. It is actually rather cool, & fun to play. You can get some Strat & Tele like tones from it, though the bridge pickup on it's own is rather thin & scratchy. The middle position apparently wires both pickups in series so you get a fatter & slightly louder sound, & I find this works well with just a touch of overdrive. The neck position is vaguely similar to the middle pickup on a Strat, strangely enough. The tone-inside-the volume pots seems like a strange idea at first, but it is fairly logical when you get used to it.

Pick up a Goldstar or Love Rock straight after playing this, & the difference in quality is huge, yet the Danelectro still has something. I guess it's kinda cool that an electric guitar can be this cheap & basic & yet still work. :p The action was quite good straight out of the box, which is often not the case with eBay purchases, & I'm enjoying this strange, quirky guitar.

Has anyone else got one? Any views on the Danectros?

Mike

Here's my Cool Copper U2 re-issue in action a few weeks ago, playing Jimmy Reed's "Shame, Shame, Shame" in open G with the Passengers.

I rescued it 8 years ago from Rock Factory in Castleford (Cas Vegas). It was dinged up, but I liked it so much that I bought a brand new one (one of the last) in Commie Red but I sold that on because it hard a harder tone than the Copper one. I've played a few others and they all have individual character. I've also played the latest re-issues and they are nice guitars but I think they sound a lot different to the 90's Korean re-issues. Never had the opportunity to play an original from the 50's.

I think your colour is Blue Suede, Mike. The only differences between the 50's and 90's version is the 50's bridge plate was stainless steel instead of cast and I think the neck joint is stronger on the 90's version.

I have one.... a black U2. Got it right after they reintroduced them in the late 90's. They went away for awhile and then they reintroduced them again with a trussrod and adjustable bridge with saddles.

Good on your observation - they're cheaply made just like they were originally but they have some balls. The lipstick pickups are great.

The middle position does have a bit of an overdrive to it. If you flip the pickup leads on the switch, you get a VERY out of phase T Bone Walker honk to it in the middle position. I did that to mine.

The other thing that can be a bit of a drawback, is the wooden bridge on the older reissues and the originals. You can't do much in terms of height adjustment and intonation. The newer reissues have adjustable bridges (and a trussrod) like on this baritone:

In a couple words, they are very fun, cool and great sounding guitars.

Thanks guys.

Is mine a U2? It was just advertised as a Danelectro - being blue helped me to decide to grab it!

I'm told mine is late 90s, & it has a made in Korea sticker on the back of the headstock.

I thought the bridge might be a problem, but it seems fine as it is. It looks as though you can adjust the height of the metal plate the rosewood seems to be glued to.

Yes - it's a Dano U2. Here's the story:

Not to be confused with the U1 (single pickup)

I'll have to give that phase swap a try Marcus. 8)

Yes Mike, yours is a U2, the original of which first appeared in 1956. Apparently the U stands for 'uncovered'. I think previous models had the body covered in some plastic material.

Only niggle is they are harder to restring than most guitars, but no worse than my Ric.

So mine is a 56-U2?

That's a great link Marcus - thanks. The list of famous Dan players surprised me - Dave Edmunds, Derek Trucks etc. etc. Very cool. 8)

Yes.... yours sounds and looks like the 90's reissue of the 1956 Danelectro U2

Now you just need to get the great sounding little portable, battery powered Dano Honeytone amp and you're good to go:

They seem to have them in Regent Sound in Denmark Street, but I assume the new ones are Chinese? Not that it should make a differenece with a Dano where it's made!

yeah, i imagine so.

I tried emailing jhs to ask about dealers, just to try them, and they said normally the vintage dealers stocked them. Needless to say, I'd already thought of that, and none here seemed to. :(

Not sure where the new ones are made and like you said, doesn't really matter.

Here's one of the most famous, original Danos:
