It looks like they've been there for a while!

I changed the pickup rings on my clownburst LS80 from cream to black when I changed to a set of black EMG's and it does change the look..in fact..If I could find all black hardware I think it'd look great..it seems to tone down the clownburst a bit.

OK, the second set of rings arrived today, this time from

http://www.axetec.co.uk/index.htm

These are even slimmer still than the ones from axerus, & they seem to fit the curve of the top a bit better too, so probably the better choice. But, they are still too big to allow the scratchplate to fit without surgery, so I guess I'm going to have to get used to the guitar without it.

It's growing on me.

:p

Are you sure you've got the right rings?
There are 2 kind of HB rings:
1 - Gibson (and MIJ Tokai)
2 - Epiphone, and most if not all the MIK and MIC Gibson clones, Tokai included, which are slightly larger, so they don't fit with Gibson and MIJ scratch plates

I've found the right ones (1) at WD uk

It's a Les Paul, so I'm not sure about anything!

You mean one of these will fit the Tokai scratchplate, & still be slimmer than the Tokai rings?

It's a Les Paul, ok, but MIJ ?

The WD low rings dimensions:
Overall size - 89mm x 44.5mm. Depth - 2.5mm up to 5mm.
Centre to centre of the two Humbucker mounting holes - 77.5mm.

The axetec ones are bigger: http://www.axetec.co.uk/pumr01 dimensions 02.gif , that's why they don't fit

An other info:

WD is the only place in the world where I've found a Gotoh ABR-1 (not Nashville) bridge, nickel, no wire.
And it's only ?16

Sorry too ... but my forum account had been desactivated, reactivated by ned yesterday evening !!!

No problems, I think I'll keep it without the scratchplate for now, but it's good to know that the WD ones fit. Thanks. Maybe I'll get a set one day, if I get bored with this look.

Those are the wrong dimensions. The flat bottomed rings are 44.5mm

http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/product/HUM_MOUNTING_RING_LOW_CREAM_HMRCL

but the ones for an archtop guitar are 46mm

http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/product/HUM_MOUNTING_RING_LOW_ARCHTOP_CREAM_HMRCLARCH

so they will be slighty bigger than the axetec ones, which are 45.5mm.

So the scratchplate won't fit around the WD ones either.

By the way, why do you want archetop rings on an LP?
I've always used flat on mines, they look nicer, with a very light bendig of the ring.
May be your LS top is rounder than mines.
Archetop rings are for archetop guitars: 335 type. Even on my ES, the neck ring is better flat than arched.

Because an LP is an carved top arch top guitar! The flat rings are intended for flat top guitars, like LP Specials. Tokai fit archtop rings to LRs, & I think Gibson do to LP Standards - don't they?

Surely a flat-bottomed ring has to be twisted into shape to fit on an LP - do you have any pics? I really can't imagine that. I would also imagine that forcing a flat ring to follow the curve of an arch top would make it liable to crack & split?

I've just been to check, & I was wrong - the Tokai rings are flat-bottomed. Well that might explain the 2 problems - 1, the rings were too high to allow the action to be lowered to where I wanted it. And 2, why one of the rings was split when I got it!

What do other LP owners use?

Mike,

I think you know thjis but just in case. LP pickup rings are flat bottomed but tapered. Both pickup rings get thicker towards the bridge.

No I didn't know that! I assumed the arched top required curved bottom rings.

LPs are such peculiar things......

:-?

That's exactly what mine were like and bust in the same place! If I had the action where I liked it the strings were ratting on the pole pieces :(

The new rings I went for were tappered like in DaveWW post but I got the flat bottomed ones as opposed to the arched ones.

They don't fit perfect as there's a tiny slither of space under the screws as I've not tightened them down really hard. But its insignificant.

I think I'll sand the middle of the ring down when I do my pup change.
