Tokai MK 2 Pickups - sound a bit weak ? - improving the tone

yeh I've still to have a go at winding. I bought some blank coils still thinking about the building of the winding gear/machine. I'm sure the coil winding pattern will make a difference but I wonder if it makes as much difference as changing all the other parts does. My LS150F MKII bridge now...

Tokai MK 2 Pickups - sound a bit weak ? - improving the tone

If you think your Tokai MK II pickups sound a bit thin, weak or limp or maybe you have changed them already for something having a more satisfying fuller tone, then read on. Don?t discard the MKII pickups they have great potential ! The problem is probably the pickup magnets. It seems to be a...

    MK2: Keyio vs Gotoh

yes use a pair of neodymium magnets to charge the magnets out of the MKII pickups. Neo mags are cheap and don't need to be large. Mine are 25mm in diameter and about 5mm thick. They are N38 spec with about 7KG pulling power. To remove magnet from pickup. release the two solder blobs holding the...

    MK2: Keyio vs Gotoh

I'm late to this thread I know but in 2008 I bought two Tokai LS Love Rocks. The first an LS150F which at the time the catalog spec was PAF Mk 1 pickups but they look like the ones on the photo on this thread described earlier as by Keiyo ie nickel-silver baseplate, 4 brass screws and deep...

    Are these real Tokais ?

yeh Gibson have also been guilty of this - they are milking everything they can out of the Les Paul especially all the special runs at highly inflated prices for collectors to put in glass cases and hope that it really was an investement ! - No need for Tokai to do the same surely !

    Are these real Tokais ?

Well for me I just like the classic Les Paul shape so a Tokai Love Rock has me drooling much the same as a Gibson Les Paul does. The Les Paul has been an icon in my life and played by all my favourite guitarists. When I see and play that classic design it connects all that is important to me...

    MK2 pickup modification

I mentioned in an earlier post that I had modified the Tokai Mk1 set of pickups as follows: I have put a 2.5" polished Alnico5 magnet in the neck pickup and a 2.5" rough cast Alnico 5 magnet in the bridge. The pickups were in my Ibanez Ar300 for testing and sounding rather nice. For the...

    MK2 pickup modification

The Two Tokais, LS80 (Mk2s), LS150F (Mk1s) and the Gibson Les Paul Standard (1990) for me have similar misgivings with their stock pickups. In all three I liked the neck pickup but found the bridge inadequate. Probably the Gibson pickups 490R (neck) and 498T (bridge) were to me more usable than...

    MK2 pickup modification

The stock mk2's were quite good pickups and I liked the neck enough to keep it in the LS80 when I had changed the bridge to a DiMarzio. This is all subjective because it depends on what you play through and what you play. If you always play 'Fender Clean' the original Mk2's have enough to have...

    MK2 pickup modification

Ok got a video done of the modified Mk2 pickup set. Bridge is a 2.5" Ceramic 8. Neck is a 2.5" polished Alnico 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ufs9RAOKDE Does anybody have any official information about the Tokai Mk2 pickups ? ie what magnets, inductance, resonant peak etc. From what I...

    vol/tone pot question

If your making a 59er I can recommend changing the tailpiece to an aluminium one. Helps with the weight and changes the tone slightly. I think mine was a Gotoh part I got for my LS80. I guess you could go all the way and get the Gotoh aluminium bridge with the brass saddles like on the LS150's...

    MK2 pickup modification

Yes I intend to do a YouTube video or two of the results of this when I find some time this weekend. I'll post some links up here soon. I just put a polished Alnico 5 magnet in the Tokai Mk2 neck pup on my LS80 -with pup cover - this is now sounding fuller and slightly brighter and sweeter with...

    MK2 pickup modification

Finally received some magnets took an age to arrive. I said I'd report back on this so here goes ... I put a Ceramic8 into the Tokai Mk2 bridge pickup on my LS80 with the cover off. This sounds absolutely awesome much better than the undersized Epi ceramic magnet I had codged in the initial...

    vol/tone pot question

On guitars where I have changed to CTS pots I found the guitar sounded better so I'd go for it ! Get the metric versions ie ones that aren't listed as USA thread or for Gibsons. Yes CTS pots are stiffer to operate especially with top hat knobs. If you change to speed knobs you'll be fine. More...

    Plaintop LS150 vs. Flametop/Sunburst UK LS150

Hmm yep you're right just had a look. Of course they are completely sealed. There is an oily smell though. No switch cleaner has been in there unless it was at Tokai. I'm wondering if it's the coating on the western electric type wires looks like enamal or something. Oh well who cares !
