If anyone's interested here's my Silverstar 38 and 40 tuner solution.
My '81 Silverstar that came stock with those godawful trapezoid tuners.
These are Fender 70's reissue # 0990822100 - I'm sad I had to put a tuner on there with the big F, but that's how it goes...
Here's the important stuff;
The Good;
The distance between centers of these new tuners fit perfectly on the Tokai head stock drilling pattern, the new tuner posts fit the existing Tokai bushings perfectly.
The Bad;
But, you need to drill out he back of the headstock for the collar on the back of the new tuner bodies. I drilled .375" dia x .250" deep and the new tuners dropped right in.
The new screw holes do not line up with the existing. So I filled the old holes and drilled new ones 3/32" away from the old ones, only a portion of a single old hole (far left) is visible when your done.
