Hey Ian, ;-)
I already wrote an answer but before I cou... my *#!$%& computer crashed.
So here we are, back agaiiiiiin...

But I?m just a confirmed lover of vintage character and 60?s tone - I play a completely ?straight-laced? old LS60-burst into a 1965 Marshall Mini Bluesbreaker ? that has no reverb, no master gain, & no proper tone controls either, so I have to change tone by swapping guitars instead (MIJ 57-ri Strat & and a Tele).
Similar with me.
The amp in green paisley on the pic with my Gold-Top is a Reusenzehn Greenie. Controls are Volume and Presence.
Thomas
Reu?enzehn is a german guy who builds tubeamps and effects for guitar & bass and also he makes fine hifi-amps and parts.
The Greenie was a special amp, different to his others, like the Leo. The Greenie has very little gain, maximum is, say Peter Green. The Leo will give you a ZZ Top like flavour. With my Greenie and my Goldtop in the middle position I get a fine Greeny-sound and if I were into Jazz, this amp would be a perfect companion.
If I want more gain I have to use my tubebooster (Daniel D., also Reussenzehn), my treblebooster or my Solasound made Colorsound tonebender Fuzz. If I had to name an amp to compare with the Greenie, I would say, a JTM 45, but with less gain and less volume, though the Greenie comes with 4xEL34.
A '65 Mini Bluesbreaker? Wow! Impossible to buy here. You have to know, that I'm a big Paul Weller fan and (even if I do not know if he plays a bluesbreaker or a 18 Watt or whatever) if I could get my hands on an amp like his, I would faint. Btw., I made a few pics at an Paul Weller gig in cologne in 2002, if you're interested, click on the thumbnail:
Back on the block...
That "interesting veneered guitar" is an Erlewine from 1980. Have you seen the Rockpalast Gig with ZZ Top in 1980? Billy Gibbons played (besides his Pearly Gates) two Erlewines (one was a doubleneck) at that night and from this moment on, I wanted such a guitar. But Billys Erlewine (Automatic) was handmade from Marc Erlewine, Dan Erlewines cousin, (Dan is the repair-guru, perhaps known from his books, stewmac or his Guitar player articles) and my Erlewine is the cheaper made in Japan, possible built from El Maya (don't know exactly).
Marc
Erlewine still builds this guitar, the Chiquita travel guitar, the lazer...follow the link and then click on "custom guitars".
The orange furry thing is another story.
Have you seen the other two pics? *clickediclick*
and
This is my latest amp.
"Selfmade" ;-)
I got an old Dynacord tubeamp with 2xEL84, a friend of mine built me the cabinet, I ebayed an old Celestion G12H30 and then I put this altogether and did the orange plush(?) instead of tolex.
It brings out a blistering 17 watt, with ZZ Top like grind and crunch.
If I play very hard, you can see the hair move, driven by the speaker. ;-)
It's named zottel-zwo. "zwei" or equal "zwo" is german for two.
Do I hear you say:
"Two? What was "one"?
A few years ago, I wanted to "build" me my own guitar, a special guitar for gigs. A friend sold me his used G&L-neck, I ordered a stratbody made of korina, 3 P90-pu's, tuners, trem and the rest. With another friend who had the right tools we made the routings suitable for the 3 P90. Assembling a strat is no problem an then I did... aaah, look for yourself:

Did I mention "matching headstock"? ;-) My wife made me a matching strap.
Here's a pic of both together, waiting on stage:

Wow, no computercrash this far...
And if you want to listen to the Erlewine with zottel-zwo and zottel with zottel-zwo, I extracted to little sniplets from a gig. The sound is from a videocamera so it's more on the lofi-side.
Erlewine with zottel-zwo mp3, 22 sec., 352kb
zottel with zottel-zwo mp3, 21 sec., 342kb
I'll have a beer now.
Have mercy
