An incorrect pot taper type could cause that.
You need LOG (Audio) taper ones for volume controls. 250K I believe from memory (single coil) 500K (for humbuckers).
I don't think it matters if it's Imperial or Metric as it comes with the nut anyway.

Try one and see. It's cheap enough, and easily reversible.
