Hi all just seen this ls85 mij
It's up for ?489
Does this sound a good deal
Or should I go for a new ls59 mic for ?380.
I'm leaning toward the 85
But the 59 has better looks.

Please tell me which sounds the better deal and why

Asymmetrically built bodies have not effected the sound of either my Goldstar or Telecaster.
Obviously buying without playing is always a risk, but I can't see it being any more of a problem.
Personally I like the imperfect looks as it makes the instrument look like its made for work and not show - sometimes the most attractive people are not necessarily the most beautiful

Ok. I'm not to sure why he was saying it was like that as I couldn't put up pictures.
Anyway thanks for the reply.
But would you sway more toward the mij as its made from better wood?

I think the consensus is that a MIJ Tokai is a sound bet.

It also has the correct headstock which is good - open book type and no dimple - so it's an import and not a Japanese export for the UK market which have the dimple.

The guru's will confirm that shortly!

Seems a fair price to me and looks to be in quite good, though used condition. I'd ask privately if they have more pictures to show its condition of the neck and back etc - and especially of the serial to confirm it's age.

It does look like the jack plate has a crack and could need replacing.

Thanks for that i will contact them tomorrow.
I found it on there web site, so it did confuse me that you all could see it.
Then I see it on eBay.
I thought might be a bit safer buying from a shop than joe blogs.
I will ask about the jack plug plate too, as you say looks cracked.
I'm guessing you can pick those up somewhere.
Thanks again

hi
based on the serials on my 07 and 05 tokais' it would seem that the ls85 starting 00 is year 2000 or is that too simple a conclusion?

Anyone care to verify?

cheers

Lol
You would think so
But 1980 also starts with 00
So not as simple as it seems.

Thanks for that mate
As i posted earlier I didn't realise it was on the bay.
So was confused how you had seen it. Lol
Still trying to work out the date. As on there it says 2000
But when I phoned they said 80's.

Thanks for that dombat
I guess a 1980's would be more cash.
Do you all think this a good price.
Or keep on shopping around

I definitely wouldn't go for a Chinese one over an LS85, a 2000 LS85 will be a much better guitar. The MIC ones are OK, but that's it they're only OK.
I reckon that's not too bad a price for that guitar from a retailer. I've been there and it's not a bad place. Is it close enough for you to go and try it?

Unfortunately it's isn't close to me.
I'd go for it if it's in your price range and you like the look of it.
It will be a good guitar.
I've just done a setup on my LS90Q I got last week, and it's transformed it from a good guitar to a great one, as I expected it would, just needed the truss rod adjusting to my liking. It now plays almost as well as my ES135, which is saying something, as my ES135 has the perfect neck for my taste.
The worst that could happen is you don't bond with it, in which case you should get your money back if you sold it.

Thanks for your advice
I'm not wowed by the colour and I think that's whats holding me back.
I know it's not the same but there's an epi on the bay with coil taps that's a colour I really like. But I know it's not going to be the same quality as the tokai. I'm just so indecisive because of the pros and cons. Just not sure which way to turn.

If you're not happy with the colour, wait for one that you do like.
Unless you're lucky an Epi won't be as good as a Tokai, I'd wait for the right one if I were you.
