Was just curious if anyone knew the specifications of the fabled Dry-Z pickups (thinking about getting some new pick ups wound for my Greco EG-59/45; the Screamin' 82s are alright but a tad harsh).

From another thread, I see they have 7.56kΩ - 8.09kΩ DC resistance, but I'd like to know the type of magnet (I would assume AlNiCo II or V) and any other specs people might know.

I was already planning on something low output, as I already have a pair of custom wound pickups in a Gibson that work really well in that guitar (7.5kΩ A5 neck and 8.3kΩ A2 bridge).

Thank you for any insight!

I don't think anyone has Dry Z Alnico info but the pickups used in the 70s and early 80s Ibanez guitars are very similar to the Greco pickups and both the Ibanez and Greco pickups were made by Maxon up to the early 80s. The Ibanez pickups do have Alnico magnet specs with the Ibanez Super 70 pickup having a Alnico 8 magnet (similar to Greco U-1000 Alnico 8 pickups, the U-2000 and PU-2 pickups might be Alnico 5) and the top line Ibanez Super 58 PAF having a Alnico 3 magnet so I wouldn't be surprised if both the Greco Dry Z PAF pickups (not the Dry 82 pickups) and the Ibanez Super 58 PAF pickups used Alnico 3 magnets. The Ibanez Super 58 pickup was installed in their top line guitars and the same for Greco and the Dry Z pickups. The Greco UD pickups might be ceramic and the Ibanez Super 80 pickups are ceramic and the Greco Screamin pickups might be ceramic http://music-electronics-forum.com/showthread.php?t=8452&page=6

From this page http://music-electronics-forum.com/showthread.php?t=8452&page=6 someone used a Gauss meter to measure the Dry Z magnets and they were a little lower than a Alnico 5 and he seems to suggest Alnico 4 maybe but it would be more likely that the Dry Z magnets are Alnico 3 magnets the same as the Ibanez Super 58 pickups Alnico 3 magnets.

Thanks for the info! After I read all your links, I ordered some AlNiCo IV magnets. They arrived last week and I put them in the Screamin' 82s in place of the ceramic magnets. Worked a treat, the guitar has a very sweet tone now.

Cheers!
