These unusual all over red stained Humbucker Teles seem to be part of an early "Super Edition Series" and seem to date to the middle of 1982.

There are a few ads from 1982 that announce a THS60 and THS70 models to be released May 15.

*Tele Humbucker model THS60 ¥60.000 (with super arm) THS70 ¥70.000 (with super arm)

The examples I have found production stamps on date to May (5=20 & 5=21).

They have 6 digit serial numbers which are part of the Fedner style serial number system that began in January/February of 1982. The 1xxxxx serial number indicates a 1964/65-1976 serial number.

That seems to mesh well with the 60s placement of the Tokai decal on the headstock on these examples along with the 60s style butterfly string tree.

And there seem to have been at least two levels of hardware and likely pickups on these (THS60, THS70).

So far I have seen cast saddles,

stamped steel saddles,

46749-ddc4fdf37879c7ca3388872e64962000.jpg

and even "Extra Tokai" hardware that starts to appear on Tokais in the fall of 1982.

The original knobs seem to be of two types. Metal Breezy/Tele type

and black with hats.

This one is a parts guitar, but the neck is an important clue.

First, the neck plate does not go with this guitar... Not sure where it came from? It’s not even a Tokai neck plate. So let's set that aside.

Second, the neck and body codes are different. At least one month apart which is not a big deal, but the batch number is also different.

So the neck is trans red from May, and the body is a TE70 in wine red (WR) from April.

So not sure when the neck & body were put together?

Neck: 5=20 or 5-20 PA
Body: 4=6 WR Z

IMG_0493.jpeg

Switch code on that body is possibly 08 or August of 1980?

And here is a 4=6 TE70 from 1981. That gives us a likely date for the body.

1982 spring catalog

Scan 1.jpeg

And it seems like these 6 digit serial numbers starting with 10xxxx or 11xxxx begin in 1982 with the new numbering system?

That number range was slotted for 1964/65 models and I noticed in the original thread the owner pointed out that the decal is in the 60s location. Also has the butterfly string tree. So that all fits.

So spaghetti logo & 6 digit serial numbers would suggest that these were made in 1982.

Stamps that I can see so far are 5=20 and 5=21.

So May 1982 ?

Scan.jpeg

Another clue….

Remnants of a 60 sticker that the owner spotted.

So THS60 ?

One fly in the ointment with the 1982 date is the goto PAF pickups in one example. These were phased out by 1982. So that’s something to think about.

Looks like the saddles on two of the three complete examples are cast. The other is stamped.

I wonder if hardware and pickups differentiated THS60 and 70?

Yep. These were not super high spec.

They seem to be precursors of the later tremolo Breezy’s that we see in the mid 80s.

These red ones with the spag logo seem to be from 1982.
