Hello, new to the forum so sorry if I'm posting on the wrong topic area. I've just bought a MIJ Love Rock and I wonder if anyone could tell me what model it's likely to be as I'm stumped. It's a 2002 serial number 0205129 and it's a beautiful matte CS finish which I've never seen before with a solid 2 piece maple cap and mahogany body. I'd like to put some pics up but not sure how but if anyone can enlighten me that'd be great. Jimmy

Go to www.photobucket.com you'll figure it out , pics would be best if were going to identify the model!

And welcome to the forum :D

I think I've got the hang of photobucket so here's the link. I'll get a few more pics up. I had an LS75Q oak quilt and that was great but there was a lot of filler between the fretmarkers and the board which tended to take the gloss off the quality elsewhere but this one is immaculate with no filler visible http://s265.photobucket.com/albums/ii217/JimmyR_02/Tokai/

You can post the images straight in to your message like this:

My guess is an LS80, the higher end models tend to have flamey tops, not that that makes them sound any better :D

I thought it may have been an LS60 or 65 as I thought they were the only ones that came with plain caps but to be honest I haven't seen one of these matte finish ones anywhere. The other reason I thought it might be an entry level Japanese one was the 3 piece mahogany back ( unless my eyes have gone funny with age ) even though it's almost invisible to the eye. It's near mint and a stunning player though so I'm thinking of a pair of Bareknuckle emeralds to spice it up a bit. I only paid ?200 for it used and that included the brand new tweed hardcase so it's definitely worth upgrading!

You never know, I might actually keep this one as it's the same colour as Scott Gorham's but I have 2 other guitars so 1 of them will have to go! I just couldn't pass up on it at the price. I think people were put off by the seller because of his feedback and the fact he was unsure himself what it was but it was worth the gamble in the end. I still don't get why Tokai don't put model numbers on the guitars though even if it's just on the truss rod cover

Because they want their guitars to be inscrutable too. Though if they were going to be helpful and put model numbers on their guitars, a removable bit like a truss rod cover wouldn't be the best place possible. We see enough fakes already

Hi Jimmy,
I'm the one you sold the LS 75Q to .... Will upload some pictures soon .cant see any filler. but cant see the Gibson Classic plus pickup that should of been in so just took delivery of some fantastically hand made pickups from Catswiskers. He made them to my own spec they are a beautifully matched set with Zebra finish but instead of white done vintage . The guy Allan cant do enough for you to get the sound you like...
here is a link http://www.catswhiskerpickups.co.uk/index.html

cheers
John

The Catswhiskers sound promising especially at the prices. I was thinking of Bareknuckles as I've got one of Tim's Uber Sinner hot single coils and it is fantastic so thought I'd give his humbuckers a go. Only problem is they're around ?90 or so

True enough I suppose. I heard they sometimes put the model in the bridge cavity but whether this is an urban myth I don't know. I can't remember whether there was anything in my LS75Q ( which was another great guitar ) but they are easy enough to recognise anyway.

Hi JimmyR,
The Tokai LS75Q I had off you has the LS 75Q in the neck pickup cavity ......
We were both riped off at the time because the guy you brought it off said he had fitted the Gibson 57plus and a Arortec in the neck..STILL it a stoncking great sounding guitar now and gigs fantastic when its wound up ....

cheers
John

Hello John, hope you're still enjoying the guitar! I was making the comparison between the amount of filler around the fretmarkers of the 2 guitars as on this one there is no evidence at all whereas on the 75Q I remember there being a fair bit of black filler round some of the markers. This is obviously a bit nitpicking as they're both great guitars. The pickups on yours were definitely better than the ones in my new one though ( whatever they were! ). These are ceramic with a high output but not vintage enough for me so if I keep it they'll be changed for something more in keeping with a bit of Classic Rock!

Hi Jimmy,
Here she is will upload new pic with the Catswiskers humbuckers the sound is fantastic

Thats one sweet quilt top there Johnny!

How much of a difference are those Pups making?

Hi Johnny73 ,
They are the best sounding pups I have ever had ....and I have spent ??????? over the years looking for the sound I wanted .The guy set up making pickups for the same reason ..He told me he spent hours and hours in the 1970s and 1980 watching band in Birmingham and Wolverhampton listing for the right sound then spending many ?????? over the years so he stared to make his own and took off from there . A friend of mine who has a good band has a Gibson Standard (old one ) an he tried the Tokai he was sick looking guy after having a blast. Then he just sat there holding the Tokai and turning it over and over and said (well F*ck me ) and gave it back .
Just take a look or e-mail the guy he is a fantastic maker of pickups.
this is my mates band http://www.planetrockuk.co.uk/
and this is the pickups http://www.catswhiskerpickups.co.uk/index.html
cheers
Johnny
