LS-90 ,LS-150 and LS-320 that became LS-380 now LS-470 are different specs guitars and are in different league. It?s something you can notice when you have the three at the same time and makes you forget the model before.
LS-150s and UK equivalents while good are not the same as LS-320s(some Limited Uks have prettiest tops however) I also feel LS-320s made before 2005 are slightly different than the ones made after(older ones had that greenish turners for example that recent ones don?t have(an improve).
LS-320 project had a great luthier heading,I don?t know who the Master Luthier is at this time.Tokai has recruited some new people because production went up in demand lately.

I would go and buy a 470 if I was able to get a special one....

I have an irrational hatred of those greenish tuner buttons, both of my Bacchus guitars have them. They should be a yellowy white dammit!
I mean, if you're going to make hundreds of thousands of those tuner buttons why not take an extra 5 minutes and get the f*ckin colour right?
Why TF would anyone want greenish ones!!!! See, I really hate them.

If Tokai have access to supplies of the whiter ones then maybe I'll be able to replace my tuners or just the buttons at some point.

Beautiful guitar and a very well composed photo. What's the story on the amp? Is it yours? Only seen photos of one of those beasts.

If you own a Tokai you own a "gem"...consider yourself privileged...yep, even the LS90s are custom shop guitars. :)

This is not my opinion, this is a fact...IMO

The words 'custom shop' and 'boutique' mean different things to different people, to me they mean AAAA maple tops, MOP inlays, Brazillian rosewood and Honduran mahogany not an LS90 :D

IMO a LS90 is a production guitar that has a lot better quality-price ratio than most :D

But the high end Premium Series Tokais that are made of AAAA maple, MOP inlays, Brazillian rosewood, and Honduran mahogany are made by the same guys who make the Vintage Series LS90, they're making the same guitar but using higher quality materials.

How do you know this, I've heard different - the LS-470/540 are made under the supervision of one Master Luthier and only a VERY small team. They are not made in the same way as the LS-90 at all, Tokai Joe could explain all this much better, there's a whole different attitude needed for building the top models.

I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll find out.

Obviously they're not made "in the same way"...they're made in the Premium Series Custom shop, and the LS90 is made in the Vintage Series Custom Shop. :)
But I'm pretty sure the attitude of this master luthier you speak of is the same as the attitude of all the luthiers in the factory.

This is a special guitar, I know, I've played it...and it looks magnificent as well.

This guitar will make any Les Paul owner drool. :)

Brilliant photo...

They're the same colour as a Mint Green Fender scratchplate, which is meant to look like a 50 year old piece of white plastic that's aged.

Not entirely correct. Fender did come out with a mint green pickguard in the 60's but they were not nearly as over the top as the green ones they come out with now. Here's my 65 with the factory mint green guard:

It's mine. It's got the silverface circuit, so it simply won't overdrive until you've got the neighbours phoning the cops. But its clean sound is exceptionally sweet.

It's been badly abused. It's running 3 speakers - 2 blue Fender labled speakers (originals) and 1 extremely dodgy looking one that may not even be a guitar speaker! The circuit's been messed with in a funny way too. The bass channel's been "black-faced" (according to the over-enthusiastic guy who sold it to me), and it does give a little grit. But to be honest, I don't know what they did.

Through our local South African forum that Diamond and I are on I've discovered a great amp tech in my city. So when I have some free cash, I'll have him put two new Jensens in to go with the two original speakers, get the main circuit black-faced, and possibly have it re-covered.

It's not too hard to black-face, as it's apparently the last of Fender's hand-wired amps. But I've been told there are some complications because of the design.

As it is though, the sound is exceptionally sweet and warm. I've got compliments even from non-musicians about the guitar tone with this amp. I'm planning on getting a sansamp blonde pedal as well though for various reasons, one of which being that at small gigs the sound-guy will make me turn down below two - at which point the sweetness and depth of tone evaporates.

What year is it? The early 70' version was 50 or 60 watts and the later version of it was pushed up to 75 watts.

Yeah, without a master volume, you'll need pedals to put some crunch in it. Those amps (most old Fenders) don't start to break up until you're at about 6 on volume..... which means you won't hear the cops when they're pounding on the door.

Nice combo..... I can look at an LS150 all day long. Such a pretty guitar and such a great playing guitar.

Man this thread has lasted a long while! I have finally heard that My Ls150 has left Japan! this may mean that I might get this beast within 6 months and in time for my birthday!
And be assured when I finally get it I will take it up on my roof when it's sunny and get some quality photos on the go! The shop I ordered from have ordered two so I get some sort of choice .

Cool.... some things ARE worth waiting for and a spanking new LS150 is one of them.

Diamond - I would hate your job, couldnt bring myself to sell that one!!

No no, I didn't sell him that one, he imported it himself from Japan. :)
He sent me some hi res photos to do an advert.

But I understand what you mean.
You get used to it, at first you're in love with every single guitar, you want them all for yourself.
Although you still love every single one, after a few months they become a model number and a colour, you lose all 'feeling'...it's sad really. :(

To be honest I get more pleasure seeing a guitarist walk out a shop having just bought a Tokai than GASSING over which one to keep for myself.

You know what I want for myself...and it will most probably cost less than a regular LS92.
I'm going to ask them to make me an LS92 with no paint on the top, just the natural maple and poly finish.
The back of the body and neck, and the sides, I want finished either like they finish the Gold Tops, or the Violin Finishes.
I think that will look killer, and different, and cheap, then I wont feel guilty that I kept an expensive model for myself. :)

Do you think if I use that photo (tobacco burst) as an example for a factory order, I will get a top that will be as nice as the original?

Sure. But that's no reason not to get a once-piece back thrown in - especially when you're getting trade prices ;)

Your idea sounds wonderful though. Like a dark-back gold-top back with the natural top? That would be the absolute dog's bollocks. But maybe a super-light sunburst, almost invisible, just making the edges a hint darker the the middle.
