Another key person not named here yet is Masahiro Matsui, head of Tokai's guitar production and designer of the Hummingbird electric. That's unfortunately all the anglophone internet has to offer about Mr. Matsui. The Japanese internet has at least the happy information that Mr. Matsui is still making (pretty stunning!) guitars in his small custom shop in Hamamatsu!

(Unfortunately these second hand guitars offered in shops (1) (2) is all I can find, it seems Mr. Matsui doesn't have a website.)

Tokai Musical Instruments Research Institute (later Tokai Musical Instruments Co., Ltd.) was established in 1947, shortly after the war, for the purpose of researching and developing pianos and harmonicas.
In 1961, the company released the keyboard harmonica (Pianica) and rode the wave, and in 1964 they established a new factory and aimed for further growth.
That's when I turned my attention to the guitar.
Tokai began making guitars in 1965, and while looking sideways at the ``electric boom'' of the time, he continued making classical guitars to solidify the foundation of his technology.
In 1967, when the production process was stable, they began researching electric guitars, and on November 14 of the same year, the first electric guitar brand, a model bearing the name ``Humming Bird'', was released.
The name "Humming Bird" was actually prepared as a brand for Pianica.
When Humming Bird was launched, the models were 190S and 230S. In particular, the 230S became a hot topic because of its built-in fuzz circuit.
The Humming Bird 100S introduced here is one of the lineup that began production as a popular model in 1968, and was the second cheapest model after the 75S released at the same time.
It has a smaller body than the top model 200S, and has a unique interpretation of deformed Mosrite curves and German curves.
This area can be seen as a more sharply deformed line of the senior Guyatone's LG150T (which is also inspired by Mosrite), but as a result, the sharp horn and unique shape give off an overwhelming individuality.
Compared to the 200S, which has preset controls, the controls are simpler, with only on/off switches for the front and rear pickups, volume, and tone.
