does anyone know if the engle does good loud clean?
i haven't tried the invader, but my savage se does loud cleans. breaks up a bit when really pushed, but that's incredibly loud. i assume the other high-end engl heads are similar.
The screamer is quite nice (it gets pretty high gain imo), but it doesn't really hold a candle to the higher-end engl heads. They get ridiculously high gain, I'm pretty sure the highest gain head i've ever tried has been either an engl powerball or SE. That's including things like rectos, 5150s (!), soldanos, vht, diezel, etc. etc. Ridiculous amounts of gain, really.
Though personally I'm not a major fan of the powerball, it's too orientated towards modern metal for my liking. The SE is a lot more versatile, but then it's ridiculously expensive. Savage might be worth a look, though (based on my savage se- i haven't tried the normal savage, they're a little different).
fwiw, IMO the engl cleans are good for high gain heads (they're an awful lot nicer than e.g. a 5150 clean, but won't be as nice as an amp aimed at cleans), but I have tried several other high gain heads with as nice cleans, if not maybe even slightly nicer. It all depends on what you want, what type of tone you're after, whether you're willing to compromise on cleans for a slightly nicer lead channel, etc. etc. etc.
EDIT: i don't use EMGs either, I use a range of different pickups.
I'm not trying to sell you an engl, lol, you can get what you want, but it's not really fair to write off engl because the screamer isn't what you want (if you ask me the screamer is pretty decent for the price, just not as good as the more expensive ones). You wouldn't refuse to buy a recto (if that's what you wanted) because you don't like the mesa express, kind of thing.
