Hi people,

is this worth it? It is made in 1984, is this still a good year for Tokai?

Nice Goldstar.

Some people prefer these because of the steel tremolo block. Earlier guitars used alloy.

I have a 1984 ST70. Fine guitar.

The seller states it is an ST60, though it has U pickups. It has a 5 digit serial, and a soft V shape. This last should make it a ST60 that is a 54 replica, at least according to the catalog of 1984 ( st60 with a rosewood neck has a 64 U shape neck)?

Seems a bit odd, but 1984 was an odd period.

My understanding is that ST60s had E pickups usually, but sometimes had U's.

The V neck thing is more curious. I thought only ST80s and above had a V neck?

I was wrong, ST60 in Maple has a V neck in the 1984 catalog specs.

Here on page 2 when you enlarge the catalog, you can see that the st60, the one with the maple neck, is described as a 1954 replica and has a V neck

Yep. I posted that while you were posting.

Learned something new. Good day!

I think it also says that my 1984 ST70 has a '64U while the ST50 had a '58U... Fascinating.

Close as I can find for those years.

Not sure I like the depiction of the soft V? Looks pretty round.

Rosewood necks it just describes as round rosewood laminated board.

felixcatus, was yours the maple or rosewood fretboard?

amazing info! Thank you!

Is the 5 digit serial right for a st60?

because, if it would be a 5 digit, it would make it a 1964 Fender copy, if it woudl be a 4 digit, it would be a 1954 strat copy. I also saw different statements, people stating that st60s have 4 or 5 digit serial or it starts with L?

I don't know, all I can say is that mine was 5 digit.

Oops! ‘54V neck

Registry would say:

”1956~1960 Model 5 digits on neck plates

ST50, 60, TE50, 70, PB80”

But that was from 1982.

Guess that scheme was ditched by 1984?

I had initially thought it conformed to the link I sent. I had 1958 in my head, but it is supposed to be a 1954 V.

I guess I am wondering which V shape it would be? Did Tokai make hard V necks?

Edit: I can see the pics again. Definitely not a hard V. I can't really even see the ridge or flattish sides. Hmmm.
