MKIII

Even though I can’t confirm a date of 1984 for a TST40 because they don’t seem to have pot codes in this period, the 1984 catalog has them in it.

Tokai strat pickups

Feb. 16, 2015

Peter Mac:

From 1978 - 1984 the grey bobbins were
ST Vintage (E) = 5.7 ohm avg
ST Vintage MkII (U) = 6.2 ohm avg
1983 - 1987
ST Vintage (V) = 5.7 ohm avg
ST Vintage MkII (VII) = 6.2 ohm avg - or even "IIV"
All have wax covered cloth wire of Black (ground) and white (live) and staggered pole pieces. These are for the ST models.
Early ST-42 and ST-45 models has a ceramic magnet pickup but this was stopped by 1980

For the SS models the bobbins were black with Black and Blue wires, levelled pole pieces and were 'H' Hot or 'S' Super. In 1983 these bobbins became grey and the letters were stamped onto the base, similar to the ST series.

In all, the 'E' series are the most sought after. As far as the 'T' model goes, I have not seen them, so they could be from 1990 and later models.

Peter

The V's on the AST '56 read 6.33kOhm all three.
The E's on the St100 N 5,99kOhm,M 5,97kOhm and B 5,93kOhm.
The E's on the St80 N 6,11kOhm,M 5,95kOhm and B 5,96kOhm.

I'm confused... Not uncommon.

See post above for what Peter Mac said in 2015.

Your readings for your V pickups are similar to what he reported for VII.

Beginning to wonder if it is accurate to think of these pickups with the blue lead wire as SS pickups?

I am seeing them on Super Edition guitars also.

I noticed the other day when I was cleaning up the melted spacers on my 1983/84 Goldstar ST70's pickups that the material they are made of seems like an alloy of some sort?

Seems metallic with particles in it that sparkle and reflect light.

Pretty wild.
