I'm wondering if this is a good time to update the registry?

Specifically the "dating and ID" section.

Tokai Guitar Registry - Tokai Info: Guitar Specs, Catalogs, Magazine Reviews & Ads

And looks like the "Guitar news" section has not been updated or added to since 2007.

The Tokai Guitar Registry - Tokai Guitar Registry Latest News

And the "Search the registry" function doesn't work on my computer.

I know lots of folks that never post on the forum use the info here, but it's lacking and there have been many posts about discrepancies that could finally be addressed?

It would be cool if it was in a format that could be edited and updated over time by an administrator too.

It's a big project, but would be worthwhile. And maybe bite off one piece at a time?

Just thought I would suggest that, and ask if others who have an interest in putting something together and have specific areas they want to have addressed or added?

Would add a lot to this site as well as to the guitar community at large in my opinion.

I'm a new admin here since Ned has had his family issues. I am asking what may be done about the registry.

The main issue I believe is the dating of Fender copy guitars. The chart on the Registry is inaccurate, biased and limited. I can't count the number of people who have mis-labeled guitars for sale, or who have been unable to sort out what they bought because they relied on misleading info in the Registry.

The news section is not necessary and could be deleted in my opinion. News is covered on the forum when it comes along, which is not often. The latest news I can think of would be the sale of Tokai, but there is not much info on that available, and nothing in that news section, so I don't see the point of trying to maintain a news section. But if someone had a line to the new owners, they might use this site to communicate with the guitar world? Other than that, I don't see a need for it.

And lastly, the search function doesn't work, at least not on my computer. That's a software issue I assume. Hoefully you guys in tech could figure out a better way to search that data base? An option to add pics would be super cool and help a lot I think.

We have a wealth of info among the group of members on here. Some are long time dealers, some have written books... Seems like we should tap into that.

My two cents.

And integrating it with the forum might be a good idea too.

Not sure why it’s separate and stands alone?

In other words there’s no linkage. You have to leave this site to get to it, so I never go there tbh.

I have been talking to the head tech about registry. He is tied up in a large project but has put this on his list of things to do after the large project is done.

Probably need something to replace the dating and Id information with. It would take a while and require input from folks, but if it’s possible I’m sure some folks would want to contribute. I know I would.

And there is no reason that all of the dating info on Fender copies has to be on one chart or even one page.

Obviously the current chart is not inclusive or accurate.

Goldstars began in 1983, not 1984.

There aren’t even TST-56 & 62 models on there for starters. That was the first altered headstock. And I believe it was late 1982.

The current chart tries to do too much in a small space and is inaccurate and incomplete. Heck it only goes to 1986…

One idea is to have a separate section or page for different markets, otherwise charts need to be very complex like a flow chart.

You could have a separate section or page for changes in the US market, another for the UK, another for Europe, and one for Asia or the JDM.

Identified as a problem at least as early as 2007...

It is a 6 digit serial number which the Registry does not address becasue these come along just after the period the dating and id section addresses, where the Fender serial numer system was abandoned.

Is the Tokai registry dating information wrong?

Ok. heres my problem.I own a two tone ,maple necked goldstar st, purchased in the mid 80`.The guitar is 100% original and un mucked about with. Here are some details, Round button 50s style string retainer, deluxe split post machine heads, correct pre 1985 headstock shape, final prospec vintage style bridge and wang bar, two piece light ash body.Grey backed ,white and black cloth braided, wax potted ,11V stamped pickups. 2=6=GSx stamped in the volume and tone cavity,2-6 in the front pickup cavity, a hand written F a bit like Fender F ,followed by 2-6 on the end of the neck by the cross head truss rod. last but not least, aneck plate with 6 ,yes 6 numbers. Now according to the Tokai directory,my guitar is either an ST40,which it plainly isn`t or a copy of a strat from 64/65-75', which again it plainly isn`t. My guitar with it`s golden sunburst ash body, maple neck and round string retainer, obviously is based on an early 50`s strat. What is going on then ,is my strat an ST5o, ST 60? , was it fitted with the wrong plate at the factory? Is the directory wrong? Am I wrong ,has the world gone mad?
