Could it be as simple as OF means “Orange Finish” in the same way that VF traditionally means “ Violin Finish”?

Violin finish is variable in the shading around the perimeter of the body, single colour but less opacity around the outside.

Hi Guys,

My nearest guess to the 'OF' saga is Old Finish - kinda like a Honeyburst.
The whole VSB is kinda hard to follow as they only ran for a Year or two and I do own a 1981 VS-60 that was GR ( a Greenburst) with a Rosewood neck.
All the VSG series had a flame maple veneer on an Alder body - light and resonate - however mine had a crack in the veneer so it was refinished in Gibson '52 Goldtop Gold paint.
Anyway, from looking at the '82 Vol 5 Catalog, the VS-60 is GR (Greenburst) the VS-80 is CS (Cherry Sunburst) the VSB-60 Bass is WR (Wine Red) and the VSB-80 Bass is CS also. The puzzle is the VS-100. Is it OF or VF? I am going for OF as the colour looks solid across the top and the VF tend to shade darker towards the edges which this doesn't appear to do.
Its incredibley hard to tell due to this section of the Catalog being printed on plain paper causing a light colour bleed with the yellow background. Most of Vol 5 is gloss paper and very clear . . . and is different from Vol 6 which is all plain paper.

* * * I know the catalog refers to the 6 string as a VSB also but I believe this was a typo and it should say VS-60 * * *

Peter Mac

Now that's a colour description I could live with. No doubts about it

Oh cool. That’s that transitional logo for exports from 1982/83. I’m grabbing those pics for that thread. Very cool.

Do you mean "...beautiful trans orange finish..."?

Orange finish.... OF

I think this may be one of those htings that is never resolved with definity. Kind of like the ways people pronounce potato and tomato.

Btw, OF not listed specifically as a color option in the relevant catalogs.

Just says "standard finishes".

Not very helpful.

Exactly. Orange finish would not necessarily be translucent though? I prefer the later catalogue description of "see through" no doubts left. 8)

I think I was tired when I posted that with the B.

What is the difference between the 60 and the 80?

That’s not what the catalog translation says.

I had wondered that too.

Both the VS80 and 100 are offered with rosewood and maple fretboards.

I haven't Japanese in my head.

Could the bridges be a little different and possibly the pickups? Poly to lacquer might be another price point?
