1979 ST80 GS R 9005343

Interesting that my 1979 ST100 GS has the same neck code (8 = 3 & 4 A) but is about 1,400 units away from this guitar.

Mine is SN 9003909 made in August.

Yours is SN 9005343 neck made in August, body in December.

I see that the neck & body have different codes on your ST80.

I assume the SN 9005343 goes with the body from December.

Makes me wonder how that all came together? If the neck was sitting around for 4 months until there was another order for ST80R's?

Will probably never know.

IMG_9846_zps3c56226a.JPG

Probably not. But strange. Just trying to figure out how that could have happened.

I was assuming the guitars are being made in batches.

So I can imagine more rosewood V necks being made than needed and sitting around until another bacth is made.

I have seen this in tracking pots & production codes on other guitars where they get out of sequence and I assumed it was related to demand. I think TE80A is one guitar I have seen this with. And I assumed that was because demand was not the same as it would have been in 1987 for say a TST40.

Yeah. The first number is obviously the month. I’ve gone through enough Tokais with the pot dates to be confident in that.

The second number is apparently some sort of grouping it seems. Batch number or whatever.

The oddballs are the ones with two like my 1979 ST100. “8 = 3 & 4”. That’s a puzzle for me.

And the letters of X, Y, Z etc are mysterious as well but not nearly as important to me as figuring out that month code.

Some things may forever be a mystery unless someone finds an actual factory worker willing to go on record and say what they know from firsthand experience.

We’ve all seen the stacks of body and neck blanks. I am sure they would want to track which batch went where for quality control reasons.

1980 Tokai Springy Sound Model ST-80 S-Style Vintage Electric Guitar 100% Original w/ Case, Japan

Description:

Up for sale, a 1980 Tokai Springy Sound ST-80 in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. One of the more storied vintage Japanese Strat-style guitars, the Springy Sound models were celebrated upon their introduction for being a faithful, high-quality spin on the classic Fender platform, even finding their way into the hands of players like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy Gibbons.

Produced from 1978-83, this early Tokai features a two-piece Sen Ash body, prominent chunky V neck profile carve, dark rosewood fretboard, gray bobbin single coils, and single-ply pickguard on a gloss-finished three-tone Sunburst body. The ash body lends this Springy Sound a certain immediate note attack and midrange heft, and the rosewood board gives the guitar a sweetness and warmth. The trio of gray bobbin single coil pickups have a chewy snap and sparkle, with a round-sounding neck pickup and plenty of biting twang in the bridge position. Weighing 8lbs 3oz, this Tokai has been professionally setup here at Mike and Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, accurate intonation, and fast action.

The maple neck has a profile shape straight out of 1957, with a no-nonsense prominent V-shaped carve, measuring .875” deep at the 1st fret and .975” at the 12th. The dark rosewood fretboard has a 7 1/4“ radius and retains the original slender fretwire which is in fantastic shape with well-rounded crowns, showing only a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The original bone nut measures 1.650” (42mm) in width. On the headstock, the Tokai decal is present in spaghetti script next to the Springy Sound text, and the very forward “This is the Exact Replica of the Good Old Strat” motto and "Oldies but Goldies" text shows Tokai's intent of producing a vital, soulful iteration of this classic Fender platform. The stock set of Tokai-branded Kluson-style single-line tuners turn smoothly and hold their pitch well.

All of the stock electronics work as they should, with the Strat's Volume/Volume/Tone configuration, a five-way pickup selector switch and trio of single coil pickups. All of the original hardware is intact, and the chrome is quite clean with only a light dusting of patina on the bridge base and saddles. The saddles are even individually Tokai-branded in true vintage-spec fashion. The original gloss three-tone Sunburst finish evokes a 1962 Strat appearance and is remarkably clean. Cosmetic wear is limited to some pick scuffing across the strum path, a scant few minor dings on the lower bout perimeter and back, and a few faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The smooth gloss on the neck profile is flawless.

This Tokai is a notably well-kept upper tiered Springy Sound model, complete with the original hardshell case which retains the Tokai badge on the exterior.

1980 ST80R

From the Young Guitar special gear issue, Japan Vintage Vol. 2

Scan 5.jpeg

ST-80GSR
#0008127 ('80)

Although it is a '54 model, the fingerboard is made of rosewood and has a rounded finish. Although the 1954 model has a rosewood fingerboard, which is somewhat surprising, the ST-80 has been offered with a rosewood fingerboard from the beginning as a response to player preferences.

The adoption of a rosewood fingerboard in the 1954 model may seem surprising, but at the time it didn't seem too out of place.

Screen Shot 2024-02-12 at 3.40.44 PM.png

Pay attention to the deep and intense back contour that almost reaches the tremolo cavity cover.

Screen Shot 2024-02-12 at 3.40.31 PM.png

Look at the exquisite workmanship of this neck/pocket section! It's so precise that it doesn't allow even a 1 micron (?) gap.

Screen Shot 2024-02-12 at 3.41.02 PM.png

Until 1980, these hexagonal truss rod nuts were used, and from 1981 onwards, they were shaped like Phillips screws.

Screen Shot 2024-02-12 at 3.41.17 PM.png

The sunburst finish fades out along the edges of the body creating an exquisite gradation of color.

TOKAI SPRINGY SOUND ST-80 1979年製 - ヤフオク!

TOKAI SPRINGY SOUND ST-80.
Based on the serial number, it appears to be a 1979 guitar.
I think the rose fingerboard specification is quite rare.
It's hard to see because it's rose, but it's stamped with 80.
The neck is a V shape.
I don't know because I don't have any measurements, but I think it feels light, around 3kg.
I'm not the first owner, so I don't know how original it is.
Thank you for your support.

There is some peeling of the top lacquer on the neck head and body. Please judge by the image. There is still plenty of room left and right for the truss rod. The neck is also almost straight. The frets are about 70%. The weight of the guitar body is 3.6kg. The package will be carefully wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap and shipped in cardboard packaging. Since this is a used item, please make no complaints or returns.
