I just stumbled on something that solves a long running mystery for me.

In the 1982 catalog in the "specifications" table it clearly shows a distinction in the grade of the flamed/curly maple top between the LS200 and the 120/150.

I have a 1982 LS120 I believe. For years I have been trying to figure out what it was.

After seeing another LS120 posted today that also has some mineral streaks like mine does and realized that the intentionally graded these tops for other than the LS200s. Plus the LS200 tops were supposedly chosen by customers.

FYI, the word for solid wood in Japanese seems to translate as "veneer". And there is another word that translates as "laminate".

"Veneer" or solid.

"Laminate".

1982 catalog specs.

LS200 is clearly stated as "Highest grade curly maple".
