Yes, I suppose potting the entire production line would make sense -- after all, lots of players were seeking out higher-gain amps by that point, and the last thing a guitar company would want is a flood of warranty work due to microphonic squealing in the pickups. Basically, it's the same mentality that Gibson currently has on their instrument-destined vintage flavored pickups.
