First post here new to the forum I just won a 1983 Tokai Goldstar in fiesta red:

I know next to nothing about the ST-50 and ST-60's. I know that the Goldstars came after the lawsuit era Springy Sounds. Is this one actually a ST-50 and also is it worth the price? Any help or info you can give me is much appreciated!

Thanks

Nice Looking guitar, i have its older sister an 1980 st-70 with a maple board.
Tokai actually calls this colour "flamingo orange" and if you remove the scratch plate you should find "FO" stamped in there somewhere.

Welcome - Goldstar fan here! Looks nice. Mick is right about the colour, FO seems to be a bit more orange than Fender's Fiesta Red. Personally I'm not keen, but colour is a very subjective thing.

If it is FO, the 1985 catalogue tells me it should be an ST55 - the 55s were custom colour versions of the ST50, & cost 5000 yen more when new. Most 1983 models had the block decal, the script Goldstar decal started in very late 1983, most people would say 1984 for a guitar like yours (unless the dates were different in the US?).

Exchange rates have always been too much for my tiny brain, but a Goldie like that would usually sell for around ?300, maybe ?350 with a case, in the UK. Again, the US market might be different, depending on how common or rare these babies are.

From my experience, it's likely to be a very nice vintage type Strat. The pickups are a matter of opinion: lots of people on here love them, others feel that they are the only thing on the guitar worth changing. It's not that they are not good, it's just that the guitar should be good enough to benefit from better pickups, if that's what you want. But give it a good trial before you decide.

And let us know what you think of it when it arrives.

Enjoy 8)

Mike
