Tokai SC-2C electric guitar | eBay

This Tokai SC-2C was made in Japan in 2007

(see below).

The finish is a gorgeous AAA quilted cherry sunburst. The guitar is sort of a hybrid telecaster/Les Paul. The Tokai catalog features the model, but I have never seen another on eBay or other internet sites during the ~12 years I have owned the guitar. It is an extremely high-quality instrument, with high-end Keiyo Tokai pickups and beautiful sustain. The body bindings are made of birch. The faux abalone headstock inlay shows great color flashes like Ethiopian opal.

Conditionwise, the guitar is in excellent working and cosmetic condition with no structural damage or repairs. There are a few small blemishes, most notably on the top of the headstock where there are a couple of nicks (see photos). The hardware is in great shape with a bit of tarnish on the chrome pickup covers (see photos). The frets are also in excellent condition with only minor wear (see photo).

A hardshell case is included that fits this model well. The metal valence on the case is slightly bent and the “prop” cord that holds the top at an angle when the case is open is broken, but it works well to store and transport the instrument (see photos). A 3” Levi suede leather strap is included (see photo).

Original description from seller (in 2010):

“UP FOR AUCTION IS A TOKAI SC-2C CARVED-TOP SOLID BODY ELECTRIC GUITAR. THIS GUITAR WAS MADE IN JAPAN IN THE ORIGINAL TOKAI FACTORY IN HAMAMATSU JAPAN - COUNTRY OF ORIGIN IS PRINTED ON BACK OF HEADSTOCK.

THIS IS A NAMM SHOW DEMO FROM 2007 AND HAS BEEN SITTING IN ITS BOX SINCE THEN.

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENT WITH A BODY DESIGN THAT IS A COMBO OF TELE/LES PAUL - SIMILAR DESIGNS ARE USED BY HUBER AND HAMER. IT HAS AN ORIGINAL TOKAI HEADSTOCK. BODY IS MAHOGANY WITH A QUILT-MAPLE LAMINATE AND THE SET-NECK IS MAHOGANY. THIS IS A GIBSON-SCALE INSTRUMENT, AND THE NECK FEELS JUST LIKE THE LEGENDARY TOKAI LOVE ROCK.
THIS INSTRUMENT HAS UPGRADED TONE-PRO KLUSON TUNERS AND A QUALITY TONE PRO AVR-II BRIDGE. IT HAS KEIYO HUMBUCKING PICKUPS WITH VOLUME, TONE CONTROLS AND P/U SELECTOR SWITCH. IT IS IN EXCELLENT++ CONDITION - SOME MINOR WEAR ON THE BACK OF THE BODY AND A SMALL DENT IN ONE OF THE CORNERS OF THE HEADSTOCK (SEE PHOTO).”

From the Tokai Web site (in 2010):

“Tokai kicks off their 60th anniversary and big return to the USA market with five all-new guitars. All guitars are made by hand at the original Hamamatsu factory in Japan. The top of the line is the SC-2C, a carved single cutaway made from African mahogany with a string-through-design. The neck is quarter-sawn African mahogany with an extra deeply set tenon and 22 jumbo nickel frets. The rosewood fretboard has a 24.5 inch scale and ends with a Tone Pros AVR-II bridge. Tone Pros/Kluson machine heads are at the other end.

Hand-wound Keiyo pickups are standard and electronics include volume, tone, and three-way pickup selector switch. Finally, colors available are: Solid Black, Solid White, Gold Top, Amber, See-Thru Red, Violin, Cherry Sunburst and Tobacco Sunburst. Prices range from $1,320 to $1,550 for a quilted topped guitar.”

Diamond:

“The guitars below were the guitars released at the 2007/2008 NAMM show.

Believe it or not the SC-2 attracted a C&D letter from the big G.
The US distributor backed down just like Tom Anderson backed down a few weeks ago.

I ended up selling all these guitars that were left over from NAMM for the US distributor...one week all sold online on TGP....kept two SC-2s for myself.”
