Pretty ok, there's room. It's an odd one, I'll be curious to get a ruler right on top of the holes with strings off and mounting screws out. The Wilkinson bridge has 54mm string spacing, so very close. But very reasonably priced, so no big deal to install, take out, ebay.

OK, firstly my eyesight betrayed me, I measured wrong. Its 55mm. The standard replacements are slightly larger or slightly smaller - 54mm or 56.4mm However, Wilkinson make a steel bridge+block that allows for some deviation, so I'm going to give it a go...

This is a Silver Star I've had for a while. It's a nice guitar with excellent pickups (although I generally only use the neck pickup on Strats). One of the saddles has the adjustment screws rusted solid and the others aren't great either, so I was thinking this might be a good time to upgrade...

The ES120 (now ES135) is a top quality guitar as far as the physical instrument (wood/finish/frets) goes. However, I replaced the wiring, tuneamatic/tailpiece and pickups (Lollars) and its now 100pc in all departments. Can't fault it.

When those guitars are made, would I be right in thinking they are fretted first and bound (and nibbed!) second?

I've never had a problem with that sort of thing. It might apply to modern car headlamp bulbs, but valves are plenty sturdy enough.

I had an old 56 Fretless Wonder refretted and it never crossed my mind to keep the nibs - partly because I wanted bigger wire, and partly because I prefer more fret, less easy to slip off the neck. The chap doing it did offer, and he was well up to the task.

I'd lose the nibs and have more fret. Pointless things.

A Lollar Imperial in the neck position would be excellent. Full range, great clarity, lots of low end. I've got a matched one of the same at the bridge as well and am very happy with them, but I'm more of a jazz/blues player. Not cheap, though.

Looks like you still have the sticky film on the pickup covers! If not, get out the duraglit. On no account get wire wool anywhere near the pickups...

I've not done this myself, but I would consider... Cut a sheet of card with holes in the same positions as they are in the guitar. Then you can work on the soldering from a stable platform. Be very careful feeding the pots through the fholes. You need to protect the finish. Some kind of fuzzy...
