The mounting holes are different and the shaft hole is bigger on the grovers.

These are the Grovers I was looking at:

These look to be identical to the Gotoh ones on my Tokai:

Which Guitar Parts Resource describe as a "Direct replacement for full size Grover Rotomatic".

Now I'm confused :-?

THe Grovers are US made (or built to US spec's), and so will be built to imperial measurements (inches), whereas Gotoh's (Tokai OEM hardware) is designed and built to Far Eastern standards, and so have been made using metric measurements (millimetres).

Converting your Tokai to Grovers, you will have to increase the size of the post hole in your guitar.

Even with the metric/imperial differences, if it's advertised as a drop-in replacement you should be fine. To be honest, the metric thing isn't a big deal most of the time but when it does come up it is always a major problem.

Gotoh hardware has actually been used on Gibsons for quite some time now.

Why do you want to change them though? You've already got sealed tuners with metal buttons and they're probably lighter than Grovers. I rate Gotoh as being higher quality and better VFM as well - so why the swap?

The only reason I thought of swapping them, is that I don't like the cast buttons on the Gotoh ones. They have the mold lines down the sides. Aside from that, they work perfectly, so it's just me being poncy about cosmetic stuff

I'm going to leave well alone for now. If they really start to hack me off, I'll look at changing them :D

Thank you for all your help 8)

For a minimum fuss solution you could just change the buttons

I can't remember for sure and I don't have my love rock to hand, but I think the Grovers may have a mould line as well. Don't quote me though. 8)

I put a set of Gotoh's on my Loverock....the holes from the original heads were plugged using a cherry coloured wood putty.
The original heads were slipping all the time.
