For german fans of Warren Haynes and his band: he's coming back to Germany on Sep 6, 2005:

And the WDR will record and broadcast this of course... ;)

By the way, that was one of the best Les Paul sounds I ever heard on TV, but his Firebirds kicked even more ***... Anyhow, at the moment there is a free download of an older concert available at the Glide Magazine site:

Gov't Mule - 2003-11-15
The Fillmore
Denver, CO

You're welcome! I think these tracks do not sound as good as the TV show from Cologne that I recorded, they are thinner and not as clear. But as far as I know there are a lot of free and legal MP3 downloads available from Gov't Mule, even from their homepage:

http://www.mule.net/

You can also download that show from the E-Werk in Cologne on Mule Tracks which is the official band site for selling live recordings now ($12.95 MP3, $14.95 lossless FLAC format) with complete set list, printable CD art and reviews. I don't know if it's from the same source as the WDR TV show (i.e. the studio mixer) or from another tape/digital recorder. One difference is of course that the TV show was "only" two hours long while the official download has all the tracks played that evening.

Warren Haynes used his brown non-reverse Firebird for Bad Little Doggie (my favorite song so far), Bad Man Walking, Blind Man In The Dark and Lola Leave Your Light On while the lilac reverse Firebird was used on Slackjaw Jezebel. The rest of the TV show tracks was his Gibson R8 with flamed maple top. And yes, I also wished he wouldn't switch to the neck pickup for his solos so often... since he has such a great bridge pickup sound!

By the way, Gov't Mule still allow to tape their live concerts for private use and even trading if that particular show is not available from Mule Tracks. See these explanations from their homepage:

http://www.mule.net/legal_policies.html

Last but not least: the song you hear when accessing the homepage is Bad Little Doggie, not Lola Leave Your Light On like the file name suggests.

WDR is a TV show? And they show two hour Mule concerts!! Wow, american TV SUCKS! They never would even think of showing anything so cool.
Any idea how a fan in the States would get a copy of the WDR show (video)?
I have had the pleasure of seeing the Mule twice when Allen Woody was still with them. Awesome shows.

The WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk) is one regional TV station of the ARD (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Rundfunkanstalten Deutschlands) which was the first nationwide TV station in Germany. And the show where Gov't Mule appeared was the Rockpalast which is also well known outside of Germany for his long and "glorious" history of live TV rock concerts since the mid '70s (e.g. ZZ Top 1980 in Essen).

They are not allowed to send you a copy because of the copyrights, but there's a trading scene of Rockpalast fans for private use, and sometimes you can find illegal copies of any Rockpalast show sold on Ebay, too. Furthermore the WDR got the copyrights back from certain artists and has already published official DVDs of some legendary concerts like Rory Gallagher etc. which you can buy on Amazon or elsewhere.

You may be lucky if you ask at the Rockpalast Fans site in the "Tausch-Forum" (= Trading forum). Although it's in German, everybody will understand English there, too. Another possibility is the guestbook of the WDR Rockpalast, and more information about the Gov't Mule concert should be available in the Rockpalast archive:

By the way, I cannot copy my VHS tape for you, because I don't have a DVD burner.

In that 2 hour show they also interviewed the band for a few minutes, and they talked a bit about how Gov't Mule was formed. Warren Haynes said that Allen Woody and him were inspired by listening to an improvising rock trio (Cream or the like) while being on the tour bus with the Allman Brothers, and Allen said "Nobody does that anymore..."

Hans-thanks for your reply and the suggestions on where to find the show, I will check that out.
Oh yeah Rockpalast, I have some of those shows. I just didn't realize the WDR connection.

Now, what can you tell me about Musicladen? :D

The successor to "Beat Club", the first live TV show for rock music made by Radio Bremen (another regional TV station of the ARD), and probably a trendsetter for the German TV scene during the late '60s to mid '70s. Many great bands have played there (only a few songs though), most of them live in front of a studio audience, sometimes without audience, but still live. Playback performance came later when disco music started to take over. The sound of some guitarists over the Orange amps that seemed to belong to the studio gear was simply amazing.

more Mule stuff. videos from Warren's guitar tech about his gear
