Somehow this story escaped from me until now:

Nashville-based Gibson Guitar Corp. is debuting a new line of entry-level musical instruments to be sold in "big box" retail outlets that carry everything from toiletries and CDs to furniture and vacuum cleaners.
...
To achieve the price range of $50 to $200, which Gibson chairman Henry Juskiewicz called the "sweet spot" for mass merchandising, the company is having its instruments made in China, where it already has a manufacturing plant to handle its Epiphone line, which has been its lower-priced brand, selling at $500 and up.

It?s a shame! This awful Henry has only $ in his eyes.
Well, that's normal for a chairman of a big company, I guess. But I'm not sure that his new master plan will work out, because they don't want to use "Gibson" on the headstock of these cheapos, and you know how brand name snobs are, especially the young kiddies...

Juszkiewicz said the average new retail account will carry between three and 10 product types, each branded specifically for that retailer. Gibson's name will be only on the box as manufacturer, he said, so as to avoid confusion with Gibson brands sold in traditional outlets.

Does Wal Mart have a web site (with pics)?

Yes, but no Gibson style models in sight yet...

First Act has all the wally world rights. The other forums say that Target is getting the bargain Gibson's. Something about Target selling higher quality mechandise than wally world.

In related news Gibson has sued Elderly Music which is still a Gibson retailer for selling a copy of a Gibson banjo.

I also found two interesting pages with Google dealing with Gibson and China in general:

Elderly and Stan Web owner is one of the "vintage" guitars sellers pioneers' from old, with Gruhn and Mandolin Bros.I've bought books from him and I highly recomend this store, top notch service and they speak spanish. These Gibson people is getting crazy!!.Who is next?

I believe these are now available at Walmart.
"Best Buy" has them now, and the LP and SG copies are called "Signature" on the headstocks while the neck plate seems to have a Gibson logo:

Both CostCo and Target sell higher quality stuff than Wally World. Cost Co customers are much more willing to pay higher prices for better quality than Sams customers.

This is from my other marketing life :(
