Hi guys, first post!

I've got a 1983 love rock. The problem is, I don't know what model the guitar is. It's got the following specs:

S/N: 3016033
Finish: flame top, cherry sun burst
Pickups: Nickel (?) covered, look like PAF's

any ideas? I checked the Tokai registry but couldn't work it out. Maybe you could help!

Hazrus,

I checked through the catalogs, unfortunately we don't have a copy of the '83 catalog. But based on the '82 catalog the only Cherry burst flame top with covered pups is a LS150.

Since these are very high end models it may be worth removing your pups to check the cavity for markings that may indicate the model.

If it really is a LS150 than you my friend have scored.

Ned

I hope I've scored too.. This guitar really plays like a dream.

When removing the pickups, what do I look for in the cavity?

EDIT: BTW there is no markings on any of the frets.

There should be something written in market inside the pickup cavities. Pull the pups and report back what you find.

Hi guys, first post from Japan

I've also got a 1983 love rock recently.

S/N: 3015422
Finish: flame top, cherry sun burst
Pickups: Gotoh PAF '57 (sealed on the back of PUs, Nickel covered)

It has a round label "60" just under the S/N, so it is LS-60.
The flame top is unfortunately created from a thin film.

Pls see the below pic for your reference.

Yours is a LS60. The round sticker on the back is the model number. May be that Tokai made flame top cherry bursts with covered pups in '83. Maybe a few more examples will show up.

Hi guys,

When trying to decipher 1983 models, use the 1984 catalog with the green cover. I did have a 1983 catalog (with a cartoon drawing of Chester & Lester on the cover) and the layout style and models were very similar to the 1984 catalog rather than the 1982.
I would guess that all the Love Rocks are probably LS-60 or LS-80 models, both these had pickup covers.

Peter Mac

Do the new models rival the gibsons or just the old ones like the ls150. I assume you would buy a new love rock over an Epi? What model is good?

Well according to the 1985 catalog I have a LS80....would that be right?
It had pickup covers but I removed them...the zebra styled PAF's are original.
Forgive me for the size of this pic:

Not original turners to me.....
No...they're new Grovers...the Kluson-look-alikes were slipping and as this is my main axe...I need it to stay reliably in tune.
The serial number:5034157 tells me that it's a 1985 Love Rock...but is it a LS80 or a LS 100??
Besides pulling the pickups out is there anyother way to tell?

Update!

I finally got around to pulling out the pickups to check to see if it has a maple cap or not :)

What I found is what looks like two pieces of wood joined together - the top piece being lighter and the same colour as the top finish (ie. CSB). This looks to be about 1/2 inch thick. I could not see a join for a laminate/veneer.

So I am assuming that the top 1/2 inch thick layer is the maple cap, or is it common for tokai's of this vintage to have 2 types of wood in the body? I thought that if the guitar had a veneer top it would be solid mahogany with a very thin layer of maple on top.

There were no markings on the inside of either pickup cavity :(

So what I've got is:
1983 Love rock
Cherry sunburst
Tokai '57 PAF pickups (nickel covered)
solid maple top???

what model am I looking at?

Thanks for the info Clmazza, the guitar looks quite similar to mine. I will have to re-check next time I change strings to see if I can see a veneer line, like in your pics. My guitar looks very similar to yours, just a little more beat up.

Yours is identical to mine Clmazza.....so I guess that i can finally rest that mine's a 1985 LS60...phew
