I'm GAS'ing for a Tele, but I don't want to spend a lot to get one. My wife'd kill me for a start.

I've seen a few that look interesting, but haven't really tried any out yet. I'm thinking of spending up to about ?200, any suggestions?

Those on the list:

Squier - anything from an Affinity to the ?200 custom type one's available.
Westfield - these seem like good VFM, & look like good build quality etc
Jim Reed - seen these on eBay for about ?200 and seem pretty good
Peavey - again seem like good VFM

Unfortunately the Tokai Tele's are a bit out of the budget, and so are Thinline's (which I'd love).

Hi Skybone,

A UK company called ?Vintage? make a whole bunch of classic copies, all well under ?200 (Tele approx. ?160 I think). They get consistently good reviews in UK Guitar press. Haven?t actually tried them myself, but quality seems pretty high, eg the Gibbo copies even have set necks. Available in most shops (in London anyway) .

What about Tokai's MIK Tele (AST)? Peavey's got the Cropper Classic that is pretty sweet too.

There are also the Tele kits put out by Saga:

These are pretty cheap (retail $129.99 US) and supposedly sound pretty good. Plus you can customize it yourself and get crazy with the headstock.

Best of luck

Hi Skybone,

If you?re still looking, you may be interested in this (as I say, they have a good reputation) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3709006907&category=33039

Thanks for all the input guys, but I finally got one.

I've looked at the Vintage and the Westfield one's, and was sorely tempted, but they just didn't have that "something".

I recently saw one from a company called "Shine", which are built in China (and they do a gorgeous Gretsch 6120 double cut semi), and was really tempted as it was ?129.

But I got one. A Squier Custom II, in black, with 2 Duncan Designed P90's and a maple 'board. Had to spend a few hours setting it up, and getting a good earth on the bridge, but it plays really well and sounds fantastic.

Well good to know you got something that fits the bill . Surprising how good some innexpensive guitars are nowadays . But even more surprising just how bad some very expensive ones are - horrible sinking feeling when you pay top price for a Fender or Gibbo, and finally have to admit that it's crap !

Check these out. A mate has been eyeing these. They go pretty cheap and I think they do Tele's too.

Not seen those before, but I have seen the Jim Reed ones, which look damn fine if you ask me. The Tele's look especially good.
