My apologies if I missed a dedicated thread on these. Seems the Strats and LPs take most of the spotlight. I spotted this one on a Yahoo auction:

Has the 2-ring tulip tuners....hadn't seen them on other images through my search. Anything else stand out to you guys?....Perhaps an early model? Is roughly $1000-1,500 a fair price for these?
I'm really impressed with the quality of my Goldstar and Springy....these must be amazing. Any input from owners would be great. I have a Samick 335 copy from 1990 that is fabulous...a tad narrow neck near nut but, def quality instrument.
Many thanks!
Johnny

tokai es-100's are my favorite guitars. That looks like a real nice one. The tuners are indeed different then on mine, maybe replacements?
1000 to 1500 usd sounds like a really fair price, the natural and cherry red always seem to go for more.

There are some other things on the guitar you posted:
-looks like the pickups were replaced (could be a good thing)
-label is missing
-all mine have a piece of transparent tape in the neck pickup cavity that sais es-100.

Rest looks like a tokai :)
Nice top too.
Must admit when I was in Japan i was looking for some other es-335's, or a 335. Tried tons of great gibsons, even some vintage ones but nothing was better then my tokais.

Here are mine:

I thought 81 was the first year for the ES models - might be wrong.

I have an 81 ES100 J(azz). There was also an ES100 R(ock) with the only difference being the pickups. The R pickups are a bit hotter.

I think all who own the first ones will agree that they are as close to a 59 ES 335 as the real deal.

Curious what the pickups in the auction guitar are. Regardless, I'd snap it up. Price is good.

Those are real beauties Duff! Thanks for input as well Marcus. Check out this Greco on eBay:

Saw that yesterday. Beauty!

Here is my 100j, it's an 81 and as far as I know all original.

I went to Vintage and rare in Bath last week to sell some stuff to pay for a new kitchen and this little beauty took a chunk out of my wallet !

That's a beauty con!
Anymore pics?

Thanks Duff and I'll take a few more later, I took that before I started my weekend chores as kindly assigned by my Mrs. I should be finished by about 9pm on Sunday :)

Guys I appreciate I've only just joined and this looks a bit manufactured but I had the chance to buy Gaz Coombes (Supergrass) Gibson es 335 today and he is my wife's possibly most favourite artist.

It's the first time I've ever spend serious dosh on a guitar and been thanked by the wife afterwards !

The money came from our kitchen fund so I need to get some back....... You know what's coming next.

I'm going to have to sell the es100j as its a bit extravagent having 2 almost identical guitars when things round the house need doing. To be brutally honest , the Tokai plays better , feels better but I'd say the Gibson sounds warmer and of course it's got the wife pleasing Gaz connection.

I'm going to probably stick it on Reverb and wondered what the going rate was for these in the UK. I was thinking £1250 ? Am I in the right ballpark because I don't want to be unrealistic but also would like as much as possible towards the kitchen fund :)

Thanks for any pointers guys

sounds reasonable but people will need more pictures ofcourse. i dont think the knobs are original so some other things might be changed as well..
let me know when the add is up! :p

Knobs are okay.... some of the early cherry models had black knobs:

Those knobs are not original Marcus, I changed pots, pickups and tuners too. Can't remember what knobs she had originally.

Sorry I've been away from this thread for a while, have I misunderstood or was this guitar once yours Duff ? I've sold it on now but it was bought from vintage and rare in bath as an original one. Is that not the case then ?

Cheers

you misunderstood.. i have 3 but they are not going anywhere. The knobs aren't original, i believe they all came with the amber ones. But cherry ones do look better with the black bell knobs so who cares
