J stands for Jazz, as in Jazz orientated pickups. There was a "R" version as well for more rock orientated pups.
 
First year issue ES - said by many to be one of the best. They don't come up for sale often and the J models are hard to find, period. I've never seen a blonde one. Anyone interested in it should jump on it now - won't last long.
 
i have 3 j's. my blonde is an 82, the 2 others are from 81 and they are all exceptional. I can't say the first years are better, rather that they are all different, even the 81's have a different neck shape.
 
It's insane that the Explorer hasn't gone yet. :eek:

How much does it weigh, togps?

Is the Vee around the same weight.
