Thinkin bout trading px for an American Fender with a soft v, but reluctant as hated the hard v baseball bat on my mid nineties Japanese 54 re isssue. But then read that necks on early 80's goldstars were soft v. which are my fav necks thus far.
Anybody here know which V has the softest/thinnest neck profile between an Eric Clap Strat , a Hot Rod 57 and American Vintage 57 RE Issue ?
Sorry if this is off topic, lots of contradictory info on other fora.

excellent, ta very much, Felix, gives good visual represntation, so they moved from to a softer v from the early 80s to mid eighttes ? or just a softer v in the st50 55s than the st80s ?

Hi guys,

OK, to help clear this up as I have 3 different maple neck shapes . . .

1) MIJ Fender RI54 = 'A' neck with hard V shape

2) 1980 ST-60 = 'B' neck with U shape (similar to ST-55)

3) 1980 ST-80 = 'B' neck with soft V shape. (similar to TE-80)

All these 3 necks have a different feel and tonality to them, but to answer the original question is this.
1977 - 1982: 1 pce V neck on ST-80~120 maple neck Springy Sound
1982 - 1988 - 1 pce V neck on TST-60~100 maple neck Goldstar Sound
1982 - 1984 - 1 pce V neck on TST-56 [US model] altered headstock
1985 - 1988 - 1 pce V neck on AST-56 [US model] altered headstock
1983 - 1984 - V neck on some TST-80R Rosewood/Maple Goldstar

This is a general guide only but is accurate.

Tokai Necks, especially for the higher models can vary quite a bit.

My measurements from 5 Tokai strat/tele V-Necks (all `A`-stamped) from 1979-1982
1st fret: all measurements between 20,4 and 23mm
12th fret: all measurements between 24,2 and 25mm

If we look at felicatus measurements you see there is even more variation (22,4mm at 12th fret for a V-Neck TE-80)

I found the `softest` or more rounded V-profile on a 1982 st-80 that now belongs to another forum member.

The ST-55 is a U or C profile. I think Tokai was more consistent in reproducing that neck profile than with the V-necks but thats just my 2 cents.
