I bought a guitar on an online auction, believing it was a 1971 Fender only to learn it is most likely a Tokai (SS-60 or SS-80). Here are the details:
*Large CBS headstock with bullet truss rod. Tuners appear to be Tokai (can't see back but hex nut screw with side-load tuner).
*Maple neck and fretboard, with skunk stripe and 4-bolt neck with 6 digit serial stamp.
*"Final Prospect" saddles.
*"Made in Japan" cast tremolo block.
*Olympic White with 3-ply, 11 screw white pick guard.
*White pickup covers with staggered (?) pole pieces.

I'll try to post pics but not really sure how best to do so *help!* (perhaps in a follow up post).

Although I "grossly" overpaid for this guitar thinking it to be a '71 Fender, I am actually looking forward to getting it after reading all the good things on this Forum and online. (Being shipped -I've not received it yet.)

Any help/info identifying this guitar would be much appreciated. I really enjoy the passion with which the members here speak of their Tokai's; looking fwd to becoming a happy Tokai owner myself! Thanks!

Is it a tokai neck as well or a Fender neck on a tokai body?

I recently acquire what i thought was a 1960 fender strat.
What it really was is a TST-56 that had a 1987 Fender neck.

Great guitar but I want a Tokai neck, now. :)

See my thread on the new Tokai....VERY intersting backstory on this one.
I don't think you'll be disappointed in the Tokai.

Horax; nice post! I got my Tokai from a private online auction. I believe it was held in W. Virginia but not certain. The surf green strat is a Bill Nash relic. He does "amazing" relicing as well as building kick *** guitars. If you haven't heard of him before, check out (www.nashguitars.com). I happen to be selling a Dakota red over 3-tone Nash Tele on reverb.com if you're interested ;)

Yea! Just got a call from UPS that its being delivered today...I'll post updates ASAP...want to take the neck off and see what it says.

OK; just opened guitar...here are some first observations:
Good news! Neck is a genuine '72 Fender neck. Bad news: some schmuck scalloped the fret board from 5th fret down to 21st fret!

Tuners are locking Sperzels...not bad.

Body routes are fully copper lined so not yet able to see any markings inside pickup/control routes without taking off copper. Neck joint has a black marker "Y" written on it, which makes me think Tokai body. (Yellow? Yngwie? Yolo?) Color is more blonde than Oly White. Definitely 4 original screw holes (i.e. not a modded 3 hole body or neck."

Pickups are Dimarzio's marked "DP117 HS-3". Bridge pup is stamped into the plastic "0167". (???)

weird....WHY WOULD ANYBODY DO THAT TO A NECK????

sounds like a trip to a luthier is on the horizon, huh?

Mine has a geniune Fender neck as well with Sperzels. Weird.

as far as the Y on the neck, do you have a pic? I thought all Tokai's had a special stamping they used.

My guess is that the guy was trying to make an Yngwie copy. Pups are metal pups as well. Try to post a pic of the "Y" too. [/img]

Finally got to lifting copper shielding. Code in neck pickup route is "1=13 O". I've been searching forums and see that this relates to dating but not model numbers. Confirms however that this is in fact a Tokai body with a Fender neck. Body appears to also have been painted since code is barely legible under paint. But I can't find signs of another color so far.
