A mate turned up at a pub gig with a head and a Stagg speaker. (a 10" thing with a bass bit). He proceeded to play and it sounded fabulous.

So there's the question. Are we wasting our money on specialist name cabs? Is it cheaper just to run a head through a pa speaker?

There are no rules - what works for you might not for the guy with air-hair and a pointy guitar + huge pedalboard. For me, the G12H 30W in a 2x12/4x12 closed-back cab is my sweetspot.

Lots of classic tracks have been recorded on the cheapest and 6" and 8" speakers that Leo could get his hands on.

Lastly, it's not generally pleasant to run a distorted amp head through a PA speaker. That's full-range and will sound fizzy compared to the 'nothing over 6kHz' freq response of a typical guitar cabinet.

For clean-only tones, a full-range cab is not bad.
