New to Tokai Stratocasters - is this a good one???

Hi

I?m new to Tokai Strats (but own a Tokai LS160S) and I?m looking for a better Stratocaster than my 1989 Fender American Strat. I was looking into those Fender American Vintage 62 Strats, but they are quite pricey. As I already own a great Tokai "Les Paul", I thought I could also get a good Tokai "Strat". So I had a look at Ebay and found this one:

Hi looks okay except listings waffle :roll: , and will be an 84 model, because it has the U stamped pickups 8) Goldies are good value. BUT it always concerns me when listings have pictures that are not focused :evil:

Which one of these three would you buy if any at all? Or should I wait for something else?

Thanks for your help. I?m really new at Tokai Strats and don?t know which ones are good and which ones are not. The guitar I?m looking for should be as good as a Fender 62 reissue Strat (or better ;-)). I wouldn?t mind waiting for a better one as I have more than GBP 350 to spend. In fact, I sold a 1974 Fender Super Reverb yesterday :)...

Hi

just wanted to let you know that I?m going to buy a Springy Sound from Gottfried (togps). I bought an LS160S from him last year, so I thought it would be a good idea to buy from him again as he is a trusted seller, isn?t he?

It?s going to be an ST-60 Springy Sound in 3 tone sunburst and maple neck (if I don?t change my mind again ;-)).

Thanks to greco_burst for being the only one trying to help me with those beautiful Tokai Strats :)

You are welcome Matthias, I hope you get your Tokai Springy or Goldie, also, the springy ST-60 is very nice, poly, U shape neck, with Tokai E stamped pickups, and 2 piece Alder or Sen body, chrome plated hardware.
The next step up is the springy ST-80 with nitro finish, V neck, and nickel plated hardware (the nickel plated hardware fades to a dull matt finish over time.)

Tell me briefly the basic differences of the Tokai "E" and "U" pickups.

Gottfried told me that there was not so much of a difference between the ST-60 and ST-80 guitars except for the nitro finish, and I don?t really need a nitro finish, so I guess the ST-60 will be just fine. I hope it will be better than my Fender US Strat vom 1989...

I?m interested in the difference between E-stamped and U-stamped pickups, too. Mine is supposed to have E-stamped pickups... I hope they are the "better" ones... ;-)

Hi, I have had Tokai U pickups with 6.05kOhms, and members here have had Tokai E pickups reading lower than that....and higher than that, albeit slightly higher.
E pickups were reserved for ST60 and higher in Springy Sound including ST100 up to 1981, in 1982 ST100 had DiMarzio pickups, and only that year.
U pickups were reserved for ST42 ST50 and SS70 ('the strat'), U pickups have been found in TST50 Goldies in 1984 and i believe also E stamped pickups in TST60 Goldies in 1984 also....

So are they really hot? nope, because they really are very similiar to Fender originals from fifties and sixties output. Vintage.

Gottfried told me that the Springy ST-60 had 70s E-stamped DiMarzio pickups. You wrote that only 1982 ST-100 had DiMarzio pickups...

Yes, from a 1982 catalog no doubt
And you can clearly see that the only models that have DiMarzio are ST100 and mention of ST120 the rarest of all.

So, who started this E (vintage pickups) are DiMarzio rumour? All of you? why would you guys do that for?

Where did you get your information from that they are not Dimarzios, more to the point?

Actually, who cares who made them? I find Es weak & thin sounding, & I never much liked Dimarzios anyway. Take 'em out and fit something punchier & fatter, Es are too brittle, specially on ash/sen bodied guitars
 
Early/mid 80s German catalogue; the ST80 isn't listed, but the Es were the high-end stuff (used in the ST100 and ST120, yes), with the Us equating to the ST-Vintages.

Peter Mac has even made these links, as has every reputable and knowledgeable Tokai dealer to pass through these pages. If you have any proof to the contrary then we'd love to see it!

Edit: this "rumour" has been fact on here for far longer than Mike and I have been members, so we haven't "started it". Do some searches :)
 
Jesus, your eyes must be better than mine if you can make out what that blob of pixels says. But I can tell you it definitely doesn't say "ST80" as the body translation says that one is made of alder. ST80s are sen (translated here as ash).

On top of that - ST100s have E stamped pickups, as do ST120s. Your logic is flawed, sorry!
