It helps a lot if you are fluent in Japanese as well :D

...not from a shop I am sure...

and you can haggle in Japanese, which is a bonus...heh

From a shop indeed.
Far from Tokyo.

To haggle can be successful in Japan cause it is not a Japanese custom to do.
The shop keepers don't have a "built in" anti-haggle system like in the west.

heh no they just get their big knives out when i attempt to haggle...

its considered very ''impolite '' to barter in Japan..

Who said it is impolite?
I just use the old trick "leave the shop" if they don't lower the price. In general I get at deal before I reach the exit.

If a Japanese person haggles it is impolite but if a gaijin does they let us get away with it cause "we don't know the Japanese way :D

When we shop more expensive things in Japan my wife and I forst go to choose what we want, then she leaves the shop and I buy it :D

but as we are gaijin...heh

It is only impolite if you are japanese
Different rules apply for Gaijin :D

It is easy to get away with a lot in Japan (cultural clashe that is, he he).
After 5 years in Japan I know the culture rather well but still it is possible to play those silly games.

I once made what I thought was a very reasonable offer to a Japanese seller for a guitar I liked, but thought was a bit overpriced, the reaction I got was similar to I would have expected if I'd asked to sleep with his sister!

Did you approach him in Japanese or English?
There is a huge difference there.

But of course, it doesn't work with all sellers. I think the sellers in large cities are "harder" than the country side sellers.

I do not speak the Japanese language, and I have never been to Japan, but I have worked with many Japanese while I was employed at Hitachi Semiconductor US in Irving, TX, circa 1989/1991

I have also dealt directly with sellers in Japan via the net

The Japanese in general seem to have a propensity to be very 'sensitive' and that doesn't really work for me :p ..................
