just looked at mine and there is NO cut out on the body to facilitate truss ros access, but that might just be a mod made by a previous owner.

the Tokai model numder WILL BE STAMPED IN THE NECK PUP CAVITY right against the straight neck route under the truss rod hole. I suggest y remove a rectangle of the shielding to see if it's there if you want reassurance.

And then repainted afterwards?

It does actually look like there's something stamped on the last fret.

Mike - easy enough to repaint a white guitar. Might have been refinished too as it most would have faded a bit from that shade of white by now.

How can anybody identify or date a guitar just from those 3 pics? The body could be from anything!

... by looking at a lot of Springys!

As has been stated since, the earliest Springys have the narrow neck plate, serial number in the neck pocket, no model stamped on the end of the fretboard, and (usually) the model number stamped in the neck pickup cavity.

I can't see a narrow neckplate.

Doesn't the changed scratchplate make you doubtful about it's originality?

I know what you mean; it's just that the photo of the neck pocket looked to me like it had the narrow plate spacing. Take a look at this comparison of Springy neck pockets, one from (early) '78, the other from a year or two later:

As for the plate, the earliest Springys have blank plates (the serial number is ink-stamped on the heel of the neck):

As for the guitar in question, it's obviously not original; I was just weighing in on the year of manufacture.

Confirmed!
Late '77/early '78 do feature that...
