I DOn't know much of the reason but many MIJ guitars before 80 have MOP markers. Expensive ones like my Burny dove BD-80 but also unexpensive ones like Matsumoku epiphone accoustics, or my Greco EG-550C from 1975. My Burny dove is from 78 but I4 tried others from 1980 and if I remeber well, they were acrilycs markers.

I have a very early December 1979 Super Real EG5000 which at 50,000 Yen is pretty low end. It has real MOP fret markers. My low end Super Real has a surprising amount of features in common with the higher end Super Reals like fret edge binding, MOP markers etc. The main differences are that I have a 3 piece Maple top and a poly finish and this is where they brought the cost down. The 1979/1980 Grecos that are lower than the EG500 like the EG450 and EG480 are different. So the early Super Real 1979/1980 EG500 and above models have a lot of features in common.
