This pink Goldstar has been listed several times at ?299, & hasn't sold. ?299 isn't a bad price for a Goldstar, so is it just the colour that's putting people off, or is there something wrong with the guitar that I've missed?

I don't think I could live with that colour.... :-?

It's the wrong pink. Fender's vintage shell pink from the sixties is a much softer, almost coral / salmon color and they look great.

This one looks like a lipstick color

So you think the whole guitar is fake? I thought that Fender's Salmon Pink was an urban myth - it was just Fiesta Red that faded?

There is something wrong with the paint. I?ve seen a few Tokai pink guiatrs and they weren?t like this at all.

Not salmon pink - shell pink. It's a factory fender finish - I had one that got stolen after a gig. I don't know if the Goldstar is a fake but it could certainly be a refin (ask for a pic with the cavities and neck pocket exposed and look for the color stamp if it hasn't been oversprayed)

As I was not put off by the pink colour, I actually splurged out and bought the guitar privately.

The inside cavity is indeed pink and the colour code has not been painted over. It is stamped:

2-6-MPY
(at least I believe the last letter is a 'Y' as the stamp is slightly faded).

The colour isn't quite as 'lipstick pink' as it appeared in the advert.

Tokai Gurus - any idea as to the colour mystery of this lovely beast?

The serial number on the neckplate is:
212846

I agree that this color pink isn't a Fender color, but I used to own (2) Pink Tokai Strats, both w/ Rosewood necks that looked alot like yours.

Its hard to tell by the pictures, but is it a slight metallic pink? I don't know what the actual color is called, but I'm pretty sure that to be an original color. You might want to check the archives I think I remember someone talking about this color a year or two ago.

Best of luck and enjoy your new guitar!

Thanks very much for your feedback.

The colour of the Goldstar is indeed slightly metallic.

Another Tokai guru has indicated that the company based this particular model on the strat that Gary Moore played around the 'Victims of the Future' era - an album that was apparently very popular in Japan.

When I inspected the instrument and removed the neck, I noticed that there was a small piece of paper lodged between the neck and the body. I noticed another similar 'mod' on another instrument featured here in this parish and wanted to know whether or not Tokai did this at the factory or if it's just a 'set up trick'.

Thanks again for all your help.

All the best,

Andy

Many Strats (inc Tokai) have the paper sliver or veneer placed there. It makes quite a difference when trying to get the saddle adjustment height correct.

It's called a shim, & it's a standard way of setting the correct neck angle on a Strat, Tele etc. My 88 Fender has a piece of Fender stamped card as a shim.

That looks original to me-
I wonder if the Neck Butt number is stamped 2=6 ?
If so looks real good-
Someone has replaced the final prospect saddles-
Something doesn't look right with the top plate of the tremolo - do you have a pic with the tremolo cover in the rear off??

As requested, here are the photos of the stamp at the bottom of the neck and of the back of the trem unit.

Once again, many thanks for you help regarding the background to this lovely pink bit of Tokai goodness.

Does anyone reckon that the saddles have been changed? Or did Tokai ever use non-Final Prospec saddles on their instruments?

Forgive my ignorance, but would I be correct in assuming that this would be a copy of a '64 Fender (minus the lovely pink colour)?

Anyway, never mind all these minor details, what does it feel and sound like? That is why you bought it.... :p

I've got footage of Gary Moore playing that pink strat of his.

That's not fair on Strats. :( Only Les Pauls should be tortured by Moore.

This guitar is all kinds of lovely.

From a playability standpoint, the neck is truly sublime. Whereas my old '77 strat had a few dead spots (even after being professionally set-up) - the Tokai is lively and dynamic at every fret and on every string.

It's set up with 10-46 gauge strings and holds its tune really well, even when the trem is employed.

The pickups are not stock and feature the model number 016730 on all three of the units. I believe these pickups are Fender Tex Mex single coils. I've not come across these pickups before - are there any Tex Mex users in this parish?

It sounds like a great strat should. Not terribly hot or wimpy output-wise; a good all rounder in short.

It's an inspiring instrument with I've truly fallen in love with. My other instruments (and I have too many to post here) are getting quite jealous. And so they should.

I'm a Tokai addict now. :0)
