The picture's a bit small, but RF mentions his Tokai in a recent diary entry...

Adrian

One of my favourite players - alongside Bill Nelson and Adrian Belew.

Is there any information on what model it is? Does it sound like a Gibson?

According to his online diary, Robert Fripp acquired his black Tokai LP Standard copy from the UK importer in 1984.

Fripp was steered to Tokai after a fellow musician noticed him lugging his late-50s (59 I think) Les Paul Custom around to gigs and nearly had a heart attack ... and recommended he leave the highly prized classic safe at home and buy a Tokai copy for the road.

Fripp's Tokai has been modified with tremolo, Roland synth pickup and controls, and coil taps/phase reversals for each of the stock pickups. He also plays Fernandez LP copies (before they were forced to stop making those) and is having a custom guitar built by a UK builder (Crimson Guitars), which will also be sold to the public as a Robert Fripp model.

Here's a photo of Fripp with his Tokai ... a better view of the modifications. Can you say "swiss cheese"?

Tangentially...

I noticed in a recent Fripp diary entry that he's looking at ways of raising money for a permanent Guitar Craft headquarters near his home in the Midlands. One of his possible solutions is to sell a *1959* Les Paul.

Keep your eyes on Ebay, folks

Hi guys!
mlivingstone asked: Does it sound like a gibson?

Meanwhile I?m asking more often: "Does your Gibson sound like a Tokai?"

And that?s not a joke!

good on ya, "ACY"

On close inspection of this King Krimson Live clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHkisNZH77Y&mode=related&search= it looks like the Guitarist is using a Black Burny les Paul Custom (see the Headstock MOP inlay)
