Hi,

Interesting thread, an alu TP seems a wise upgrade.

Newbie as I am though, how do I find out I don't already have an alu tailpiece, just weigh it? And how much should it weigh (grams)?

I have a Greco Super Real EGF 1000 1982 I'd like to upgrade (if possible).

Regards, Aaf

HI Aaf,
Welcome to the forum ...

If you hold the tailpiece in the hand ... you'll realize if it is heavy or not ... the Alu ones weigh just a 1/4 of the normal zinc ones ... nearly not noticable - just the opposite to the zinc model ...

There is no secret, Guitar God oldflame:
Very simple. An Aluminum Tailpiece is made from Aluminum.

Don't hesitate ... if you have more questions ...

It's not easy to measure different weights if you don't have an alu tailpiece  .

So this is what I did: took a kitchen scale 0-2000 gram from my wife.

Took out Burny LPC Tailpiece (with strings and all) weighing 65-75 grams (don't know how much the part of the strings was).
Took out Navigator LP Tailpiece (according to specs Aluminium Tailpiece): weight as well 65-75 grams (so I guess I was fooled on that one).

BTW screws on both weighed 16 grams.
Bridge on both 50 grams (retainer wire bridges).

So... an alu tailpiece weight 15-20 gram, am I right?

Also any ideas on alu or steel (zinc alloy) screws in sound difference?

Aaf

I bought an aluminium tailpiece and Faber kit from togps this week... it arrived this morning, and I've already fitted it to my LS95.

My usual method when doing any guitar modifications (especially pickups or wiring) is to record clips before and after, so I can compare the sound. This time, though, I just trusted my ears and whacked the tailpiece in place. So...

Simple answer: It sounds different

Complex answer: It's difficult to describe exactly *how* it sounds different. There's more clarity and tightness in general. I think it's lost a tiny bit of low-end response, but that's not a problem; this guitar wasn't short of bottom end, anyway. What may have happened is that the low-end response is the same, but the higher frequencies are now being transferred through to the body more efficiently, giving an overall better balance. Whatever, it sounds **** good, and Gottfried's service is excellent :)
