My 81 Love Rock's trussrod needs a tweek but I haven't got the right wrench for the job. I'm going to have to order one from Allparts or the like, as every time I ask in a guitar shop if they have any I get told that they have them but not for sale (why the hell not BTW?! ).
Anyway, can anyone tell me what size the adjustment nut is on these rods (the traditional Gibson style, not an allen key job) so I can get the right one? I think it might be 5/16" but I'm not sure.

Go forth and measure your Love Rock nuts!

As you're in London, go to your local B&Q (or other DIY store) and buy yourself a "T-bar" with attachment's. In there should be a load of small sockets, like you get with a bigger socket set (ratchet drive etc). They should be from about 5mm to 10mm.

The nut on your truss rod should be about 8mm (same as a Yamaha SG of similar vintage). DO NOT FORGET, Japan works in metric and not Imperial!

My '99 Love Rock has an 8mm nut on the truss rod, as does my '79 Ibanez Artist, which is also of Japanese manufacture.

Specialist tools will cost. All you need is an 8mm socket & T-bar which'll cost a tenner at the most.

Just to complicate things, I think it is 5/16", because My 84 Tokai adjustment wrench matches up perfectly to a 5/16 socket I have. I agree though that metric on a MIJ item makes more sense than Imperial.

One thing though - it's a very thin-walled wrench so that it drops over the nut in that cramped space. In similar situations, I have used little closed-end wrenches (are they called box wrenches?) and ground off a lot of the steel "hoop" so that it will fit into those small cavities.

Let us know the final results, OK?

Oh yeah, by the way, a "wrench" is a spanner to you blokes

I did try to find those little box wrenches (yep, I call 'em that too) but got blank looks in all the DIY shops around where I live (although I haven't tried any of the big superstores). Thats the kind I was going to order from Allparts but seeing as they're ?5 a piece the T-bar set sounds like a better option. I just wan't sure if the sockets would have thin enough walls to get into the cavity. Guess its just a case of trying them.

Thanks guys,

James
