This thing is a "real" relic. LOL! It's beat up and I love it!

Cool! I saw that one myself. Let us know what it's like when it arrives. You won't have to worry about putting a ding in it. :)

LOL! That's for sure. It's beat up and ugly, but I was drawn to it. I'll post my findings when it arrives.

If you like SGs, you should love the Burny if it's still got the VH-1s; the older VH-1s with the black covered wires sound particularly good.

It says they are VH-1s. Wire insulation looks gray...or maybe dirty clear though. LOL! I was planning to yank them, but what are the VH-1s like? PAFish?

I recently sold an old RLG-80 to a buyer in Florida and he had a Burny or two before I sold him the dark burst. He said he would likely take the stock pickups out and replace them with something better, possibly Tom Holmes pups. I told him that once he got his hands on this Burny he would NOT want to take those VH-1s out becuase they sound THAT good. I also told him that if he didn't like the pickups that I would buy them if he replaced them. Once he got the Burny he about had a cow; he said they sounded as close to old PAFs as he'd heard in a long time. He told me I wasn't getting them back, LOL. This guy actually had to sell of a bunch of old vintage Gibby stuff because of medical bills so, he knows what the real deal sounds like too. These VH-1s were without a doubt the best sounding VH-1s I've ever owned; heavily oxidized covers with the older black wire insulation. What a great Burny; Mike got a great guitar, and a dark burst at that.

 Drool.

That guitar is gorgeous. I'll give the MK-1s a fair shot.

Got it today! Man this thing is killer! I had a Gibby SG in the 90's and this guitar feels much better. I like the neck profile a lot. Neck and neck joint are rock solid. Finish is BEAUTIFUL!

I'm going to take it apart and go through it tomorrow. I can't wait to tear into her!

Hey PoorMan,

How would you describe the neck on your Burny SG? Is it more like the current Gibson Standards and Specials or thin like a '61?

Thanks!

Jim

Congrats, great looking guitar. I have a RGL-90 Lp with VH-1's grey wires and love em to death. Mine are pretty microphonic at high gain even though I wax potted them but for rock to blues they are super sweet with awesome tone. Well done and a nice score. cheers

PoorMan, I have a mid '80s Burny 61 SG Standard copy and the neck on this thing is huge; likely just as big or bigger than any knock off brand of Lester neck I have aroung here. This is a top quality SG for sure, a great replica SG.

It has the typical wide SG neck width but front to back it's thick; 7/8" @ the 3rd fret, 29/32" @ the 7th fret, and 31/32" at the 12th fret (measured with a non digital caliper).

Neck tenon runs the full length of the neck pickup route; gray insulation VH-1s, and a 2 piece slightly off center seam body that is so well matched it really looks like 1 single piece.

It's a great SG if SGs are your gig; beats a Gibson any day 4 sure...........

Here's a few pics; maybe up for sale soon, and if so I'll post it in the CLASSIFIEDs........

Nice SG's guys

Got a black Burny SG that's great but I would like to know a little more about it. 80's or 90's? With this type of truss rod cover I should say it's from the 80's but I don't know.
How can you tell if it got VH-1 pu's, are there any specific marks?. I have belived that all Burnys from 80's and early 90's had VH-1 pu's? At the moment I have replaced mine with 2 GFS Mean 90's, not that they are better than the stock pu's just wanted to test them.

truss rod cover (these can be changed) looks like early 80s

tuners (no DELUXE; also can be changed) & nut (straight carve, not curved) look like mid to late 80s

What color (black or gray) is the insulation on the removed pickups?

Looks like a nice one!

best are greco dry Z/dry 1982 then VH-1's ..

both of these are better than most boutique pickups out there..

the dry Z sold for ?100 each in 1980..!!!!!

now in japan they go for more....

old VH1 are very much different ..and better than new ones in my view...

Thanks for the info, it's a really nice guitar. The more I play on it, the more I like the SG model. It's light and comfortable and sounds really good. Haven't measured the neck but it's definitly not a slim one, it's quite beefy.

The insulation is gray, took some pictures on the original pickups:

The pickups in my LPC Burny is so good and I'm pretty sure that those are VH-1.

Those sure look like the later version gray insulation VH-1s to my eyes. Do the other (non original) pickups sound better to your ears than the VH-1s?

No I really liked the original ones, they got sweet classic humbucker tone. The new ones are P-90 type (http://store.guitarfetish.com/me90glbltral.html) so they got another sound then the humbuckers but not as much difference in this guitar as I would have expected.

Sorry for the long absence. I've been crazy busy.

Honestly I haven't played a new SG or 61 for years so I can't rightly compare. I think probably more like a newer SG but maybe with less of a taper (chunkier). I can tell you this, I remember not liking the new SG or 61 neck much...and I like this one a lot.

If I get to play some SGs I'll post a more definitive response.

RE: VH1s. Mine are the grey wire. I was surprised by the quality. They sound darn good, but I'm still going to replace them with HighOrders (my fav of all pickups).

The HOs just arrived today. I probably won't have time to install them for a while...but I sure look forward to it. I bought some aged pickup covers from RS Guitarworks to go with the relic look of the guitar. I've already installed a Switchcraft jack and switch, Orange Drop caps, CTS pots and vintage cloth wire.

Don't know how many of you have tried HighOrders, but I can't say enough good things about them. I've tried the Duncan Custom Shop, Wolfetone, Fralin...you name it. HOs are by far my favorite and you can get them CHEAP.
