There is a lot of discussion over at the LPF currently about how this is probably a Greco or another Japanese clone. I don't think its Japanese at all, but Im curious if anyone here has any thoughts on what it really is or if there is anything that would distinguish it as a Japanese guitar. Here's are the pics:

TIA

Is it up on ebay or is this one of those "found this under grandpa's bed, anyone know what it might be worth" post?

The pots appear to have no date codes on them, though the photo is certainly not the best.

Pickup, patent applied for sticker? Neck pickup, conveniently not showing the tenon.

Serial #, is that scheme consistant with/faking a '59?

Tuners look pretty new. Gibson Deluxe? Again, poor photo.

Got a link to the LPF thread?

Link to LPF thread is http://www.lespaulforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113928

Im 100% sure its not a '59 'burst. No way. Inlays are wrong, top carve is wrong, edge radius is wrong, the routes are wrong, serial number is previously unaccounted for with the wrong font, etc, etc. Tenon is actually correct (there are more pics), and it has some '50s parts on it, but almost all of the details are just flat out wrong.

It has been pulled from ebay twice in as many weeks. Its a forgery, no question. Seller has claimed to own it since the '70s and the weird thing is that there is a reputable known local luthier is claiming its authentic that was mentioned in the ad and that has answered emails about the guitar swearing its the real thing. I know its a fake, Im just trying to figure out it started out as.

TIA

Eh, gotta be registered over there to view the thread.......The inlays sort of remind me of Deluxe inlays, not that I'm an expert, just what caught my eye when you mentioned the inlays.

"This is the real deal folks!"

Anytime someone says this, it's not the real deal. The "real deal" doesn't need to be explained as the "real deal", it'll be documented with the best photos possible.

"I am selling this guitar for a 57 year old acquaintance of mine"

So the seller is not the seller? Run Forest, run!!!

"The guitar was examined with a black light at The Guitar Center in Colonie; NY."

Well, I'd take my holy grail guitar to GC for verification as well. No mention of any vintage collection or authority or whatever in their database. http://www.guitarcenter.com/locations/store.cfm?store=817

"I will put the winner in direct telephone contact of the owner of the guitar to make arrangements for payment, and delivery."

Ah, yes, outside of ebay, convenient.

"This guitar was recently authenticated by Mr. Mark Pelkey whom I spoke to on the phone today. (mtnguitars@aol.com)"

Is that email addy really his, though? A google search:
Your search - mtnguitars@aol.com - did not match any documents.

.. +1. Of the 1600 or so real bursts, most all of them are well documented and the people who buy/sell in that arena mostly know of each other and /or the product.
