I just picked up a JSB from a pawnbrokers at what I think is a very good price. It's all there and plays fine, though it's got plenty of dings in the body. The only thing that concerns me is that the nut is not central - it has shifted a couple of mm towards the E string. Still seems to play OK, but I'd like to set it straight. Any advice?

Also any pointers on the stuff everyone asks - dating, value etc would be appreciated. FWIW I think it's about an '84, it's got the script logo on a natural maple Fender shaped head with the "Oldies but Goodies" decal, and a metallic red body and white scratchguard.

Cheers

Just push it back to where you think it should be. If you want to perform a permanent repair just take the strings off, tap the nut out with a punch and then stick a bit of wood glue in the nut slot, stick the nut back in, clean the excess glue off and Bob's your uncle.
I have an old Westone Bass which does the same thing from time to time.

Got the bass home last night, reset the nut, and had a bit of a play. It had been tuned way high and after I retuned it it kept changing - I'll do it again tonight and see if it settles. In this situation do the assembled masses think it might be beneficial to replace the strings?

I took a few photos too - if anyone is interested you can see a general shot and a pic of the head at

Apologies for the cheapo Yamaha next to it!
