Although some would argue otherwise, Flametop vs. Plaintop really has little effect on tone. Veneer vs. Solid top does. The LS-120 tops are veneer. Plus, the LS-120 fingerboards are Ebony and I prefer rosewood. Tokai makes a model LS-150, which is not on Ishibashi's website. It's a solid, one-piece top (flamed), rosewood fretboard, and upgraded electronics. It's 120,000 Yen (136,000 Yen shipped to the US). Noriko at Ishibashi can send you the specs. I recently picked up an LS-150 and other than swapping the pups, this one is a keeper!

Good luck,

The LS120F from the 2003-2004 catalog has a two-piece mahogany back and a flamed maple veneer while the LS150 has a solid flamed maple top and one-piece mahogany back. The only Tokai Love Rock with ebony fretboard besides the new Les Paul Custom models LC185 and LC180S is the LS200, not the LS120.

There is a special order "Pacifix Exclusiv Series" Love Rock available from a Japanese shop with bookmatched plain maple top with the model number LS290, see this thread. In the catalog the new LS135 also has this top, i.e. no flames, but one-piece mahogany back, deep joint neck, brass saddles and aluminum tailpiece, CTS pots, sprague orange drop caps, Switchcraft jack and lacquer finish. These features put it in the range of a new Gibson Historic Reissue 1958 model which doesn't have a flamed maple top anymore, as far as I know.

By the way, the successor to the LS120F in the new Tokai catalog is the LS125F with the same specs.

I'll go for a LS150 as I said many times.Just for a little more money you get a higher specs guitars.I really like mine.....I will try it live very soon.
Congrats to Tokai for reissuing this model and ES150 too.....

Hello all,

I'm new here, and I'm about to place an order with Ishibashi, but I can't decide between the LS120 and the LS150. Right now, the LS150 is only available in matt violin finish, and all things being equal, I'd prefer glossy. Does the matt finish show the grain as well as the gloss? I'm not impressed with the pictures, but sometimes pictures can be very misleading. Any thoughts?

I know it's shallow to make a decision based on finish, but hey, even though I'm only skin deep I'm a mile wide.

I used to have a Greco ES-175 copy in addition to my '50s and '60s vintage Gibson hollow bodies and I was always impressed with the value. I also have a Custom Shop '56 Goldtop reissue with Jason Lollar P90s that is my "go to" ax right now. In certain situations, however, I want an LP with humbuckers and one of the Tokai's looks like it will suit me perfectly.

Hans, you really seem to know your stuff. I stand corrected. The LS-200 has the ebony board, not the LS-120. The LS-150 is really the "sweet spot" in terms of price/features IMHO. I recently picked one up in Violin finish (non-matte) and couldn't be happier. The top is flamely, but not obscene, the weight is light (~8 lbs) and the neck feels like my '59 ES-335 Historic re-issue. I've got a set of Voodoo Humbuckers on the way, which should complete the package. For the money, I don't really think you can go wrong with any of the Japanese-made Tokai's. It's just a matter of preference and what you have to spend.

I've never seen a Tokai with matt finish in person, only pictures of it, and for my taste it's also a bit too much "satin". If you want a LS150 in glossy finish, you might try to find one through other Japanese online shops as well. The threads about that model should have some links to these dealers.
