Hello I'm Dom.
I'm new on the post and new to Tokai guitars. By the way, lately I start to be interested on them in particularly to the stratocaster models, reason why I just bought an AST 56 vintage series. Looking at pictures and reading the forum I now suspect that the guitar it might be not an original Tokai. Can anyone confirm looking at the pictures?
Pictures are on the link below.
Appreciate
Dom

Electronics are not Tokai, Nor are the pickups. Neck is 100 % Tokai. No codes in the body mean either a refinish in Black or not Tokai body. Hopefully someone with a better eye for these models will chime in with more info.

I think the pickups are fender 57/62 but I'm not sure. The body looks tokay even if doesn't have the pickups screws hole. Is possible that after 1984 Tokai didn't put stamps on the body and use the new headstock shape as reference?

Hi and welcome. Good to see the detailed photos. As above: neck, neck plate, bridge and vol / tone knob are Tokai so wondering if previous owner has combined two guitars and gone with the best bits and wanted to sell on the AST neck. Or blended 2 and sold them both as Tokais. I doubt they missed off the body codes.

Check out the pictures in the free preview in my signature link.

Thanks for your reply. I don't know what happened to the guitar, I just bought it from someone who passed away, I mean form he's wife.
Looking on the web I found a couple post showing some tokay with the same body shape and they are Tokai. The guitar might have to be refinished?

Also on the Registry I found this:

http://www.tokaiforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=170173&sid=e9f57ae631d5703dda05efe6add0dc4c.

The link tokaiforum will show a body with the same step on the back router my guitar have, also one of the picture linked above show a AST 62 with the same step on the back router. So for me the body seem to be Tokai but mystery is the missing serial.
What do you think?

Thanks for you interest.

OriginalTokai neck and Tokai body.Body is resprayed from natural, hence no body serial number.Bridge block, trem unit, machine heads are all original.Replaced pickguard perhaps, but all electronics and pickups are non original.

Thank you for the info.
One more question: as a read that L was used for the AST 62 or the Goldstar sound 60 is any chance the L30697 was used on a AST 56?

Sometimes, very rarely, Tokais ended up with the wrong neckplates at the factory ,so yes it is possible for a maple necked guitar to have ended up with an L series plate.L series plates were nearly always fitted to rosewood necked guitars, but exceptions have been seen before.

right. I'll try to find the original pickup and pots to rebuild it as original and maybe try to find the stamped number in the cavity using a bit of acetone. The guitar is fantastic and the neck is great. I paid 290 pounds, maybe too much, but it is not easy find one and in this condition. The lacquer is fade from when was refinished which indicate that the job was done many years ago.
thanks to you all for the help.

Guys I'm happy to show you what I found

The body as the same number of the neck so the guitar is original.

in reality I'm happy because I have a tokay body and because it match with the neck I'm twice happy

That's great news and I am also happy to hear it. 8)

But there's no need confusing people in making suggestions 'body and neck codes have to match'.

I took us a long time to 'prove', that a Tokai can be 'all original' without having matching codes.
