Hi there,

I'm shopping around for a Japanese Les Paul model, and am looking for anything Tokai from the mid 70's to early 90's, but as I'm looking for a model with the mahogany body and a full maple cap, I'm not clear what has what.

What model numbers and up should I be looking for?

Cheers,

Nick

LS-50 or 60: multipeice mahog body
2pc maple cap (plaintop) on 60
sometimes 3pc maple cap (plain) on 60
both poly

LS-80, LS-100 - 1pc mahog body, 2pc maple cap
mostly plain, some flame examples

LS-150, LS-200 - 1pc mahog body, 2pc flamed maple cap

Catalog specs change around 1982.
If you want to be sure you don't buy a veneer top, buy a pre 1982 LS-50, 60, 80 or 100. All feature a full maho back & full maple top.
As Mono says there are differences between those models:
LS-50 2-3P back, 3P top, 14 degree headstock angle, poly finish
LS-60 2P back, 2P centre seam plain top, 14 degree headstock angle, poly finish
LS-80 1P back, 2P centre seam plain/slightly figured top, 17 degree headstock angle, nitro finish
LS-100 1P back, 2P centre seam plain/slightly figured top, 17 degree headstock angle, nitro finish, DiMarzio PAFs
